This would never be publicly revealed, since the US would be admitting it is fighting a proxy war with a mostly radical Muslim mercenary army. Tactically, Palmyra is not an ideal location. 50,000 population as of 2004, probably less than a quarter of that now, say 8,000 people left in the city. If I was going to attack ISIS, I'd set up a wide perimeter around Palmyra, drop leaflets to allow the citizens to evacuate, and bomb that town into dust. Embrace the cognitive dissonance. |
