Humans learn by associating events that occur together in time. When this association has been made, conditioning has occurred. Classical Conditioning: This is a passive process, no deliberate initiation of behavior, just responding to environmental stimuli. Also called respondent conditioning. Operant Conditioning: Operant conditioning has been widely applied in clinical settings (i.e., behavior modification) as well as teaching (i.e., classroom management) and instructional development (e.g., programmed instruction). Parenthetically, it should be noted that Skinner rejected the idea of theories of learning (see Skinner, 1950). Example: By way of example, consider the implications of reinforcement theory as applied to the development of programmed instruction (Markle, 1969; Skinner, 1968) 1. Practice should take the form of question (stimulus) - answer (response) frames which expose the student to the subject in gradual steps 2. Require that the learner make a response for every frame and receive immediate feedback 3. Try to arrange the difficulty of the questions so the response is always correct and hence a positive reinforcement 4. Ensure that good performance in the lesson is paired with secondary reinforcers such as verbal praise, prizes and good grades. Principles: 1. Behavior that is positively reinforced will reoccur; intermittent reinforcement is particularly effective 2. Information should be presented in small amounts so that responses can be reinforced ("shaping") 3. Reinforcements will generalize across similar stimuli ("stimulus generalization") producing secondary conditioning ---- Hrmm.. Here is the links to these pages. In the seminal work, In the Absence of the Sacred, by author Jerry Mander, one subject he discusses, among many, is a situation in the Canadian Northwestern Provinces in the Seventies, where the Canadian government and major oil interests wanted to explore and drill for oil on lands owned by the Dene Indian Nations, and construct the Mackenzie oil pipeline across the same land. The Dene Nation strongly resisted such activity, and would not contract out such activity, the preservation of the earth´s natural resources of course their primary concern. The solution how the Dene Nation rolled over to major government and corporate oil interests should be a lesson to us all on the affect of television on an individuals and cultures belief system. They merely provided the Dene Nation with cable television. Within two years they had numerous violent crimes, a murder, arrests for public drunkenness (they quickly clamored for liquor, something previously alien to these people) family violence, rapes, etc. They developed a taste for cars, consumer electronics, woman started wearing makeup and adopting materialistic tendencies, as did the men, who fancied new cars. Of course big government was waiting for an opportune time to cash in on their television investment, and low and behold, the Dene Nation rolled over and signed the oil leases and pipeline developement contracts. The ancient art of storytelling was lost, as the new "story" was television. An indigenous native Americans culture was for a large part lost forever, and the rest is history. As a side note I work in the TV /Film industry and am conversant on the technical aspects of how the NTSC TV scanning system works in the US, which in my view is directly responsible for the term couch potato. Our subconscious' are already primed, as mentioned, to get info more often, faster... Wow just found this, a speech by Rupert Murdoch: "What is happening is, in short, a revolution in the way young people are accessing news. They don’t want to rely on the morning paper for their up-to-date information. They don’t want to rely on a god-like figure from above to tell them what’s important. And to carry the religion analogy a bit further, they certainly don’t want news presented as gospel. Instead, they want their news on demand, when it works for them. They want control over their media, instead of being controlled by it. They want to question, to probe, to offer a different angle. Think about how blogs and message boards revealed that Kryptonite bicycle locks were vulnerable to a Bic pen. Or the Swiftboat incident. Or the swift departure of Dan Rather from CBS. One commentator, Jeff Jarvis, puts it this way: give the people control of media, they will use it. Don’t give people control of media, and you will lose them..." "And with the growing proliferation of broadband, the emphasis online is shifting from text only to text with video. The future is soon upon us in this regard. Google and Yahoo already are testing video search while other established cable brands, including FOX News, are accompanying their text news stories with video clips. " [link to www.newscorp.com] |

Quoting: Witness_We read for entertainment. Lame, reading is for gathering information. Reading for entertainment is for people who lived in the 1950's. peaks and troughs baby, peaks and troughs, you can see the inner programming of our world using peaks and troughs. I find it Ironic that you threw out your television yet kept a working computer in the house, using this device you can watch ANY television program and any film, some films even before they are released on television. The television is a mighty invention, it controls the world, it was television that made you throw it away, it is so powerfull that it can destroy itself. Peaks and troughs, if you dumb people down so much, they will eventually rise back up and grasp and absorb as much information as possible. Inevitably people will know too much and then they will take a step back and chill. peaks and troughs, it is a fundemental aspect of everything, nothing is constant, nothing will remain the same forever. What is now, will not be in the futer and was not in the past. get a grip folks Remember the people who control the world are not evil, they are not controled or manipulated by aliens, they are not reptiles, they don't want to control you, they are simply more intelligent than you. |

By the OP's logic if someone becomes more intelligent by watching television then the same device that makes someone more capable is the same device that makes someone less capable. Therefor, it is not the television that makes people dumb. After all it is just a device the decodes a signal and uses that code to send signals and power to speakers and lights to make images and sounds. It is people who are dumb, people character comes forth in this world, some become world leaders, some people live on the street and beg, some people stay in mediocrity, infact most stay there. Video is better than text, by miles and miles. what about rolling text on a video, where does that fit in(like the beginning of star wars), is that worse than a book or better than a video. Conclusion, OP discovered 9/11 was an inside job 4 months ago and is just going through the motions. OP, can you tell me how to walk on the moon? |
