If I cannot accept forgiveness will I always fail as a Christian? (Serious, life or death question)
I will be doing my best to moderate this thread. I'm at my wits end and I need to find an answer to this problem - and soon!

I believe, by faith, that Jesus Christ (or Yahushua ha Moshiach - no, His name wasn't Jesus but I also don't claim to know the proper spelling either as I've seen many variations) is my Lord and Savior.

I believe, by faith, that He died for the sins of the world.

I believe, by faith, that He was crucified, died and was buried and on the third day rose from the dead in fulfillment of the scriptures.

I believe, by faith, that He is the Son of God and IS God.

I believe, by faith, that He is coming again to judge the living and the dead and that His kingdom will have no end.

I believe in God's Word that says that if I confess with my mouth that "Jesus is Lord" and believe that God raised Him from the dead then I will be saved.

I have studied the Scriptures so many times. Front and back. I read the Bible. I meditate on His word. I pray. I try my absolute best to walk according to the Scriptures.

What I CANNOT believe, no matter how hard I try to bring myself to accept this - is that a wretch such as myself could be forgiven.

I KNOW that this sets me apart from God and shows that I am 'leaning on my own understanding' and some have even said that refusing to forgive myself is trying to make myself out to be God by saying that 'I know better than He does'. I understand why some would suggest this.

I know I am sick. I know that I am a sinner. There is scarce a sin that exists in the hearts and minds of the wicked that I have not done or thought about doing at some point. I am a sinner of the highest order. I know that I NEED a savior. I NEED to be forgiven and to receive salvation and grace.

But if I cannot ever forgive myself and truly accept and believe, by faith, that I am forgiven and washed in the Blood of the Lamb; of Jesus Christ; then HOW can I ever live a successful Christian life?

Why do I remain so empty?

Am I doomed? Am I forever lost?

Or is this spiritual warfare?

If I cannot ever earn my way into Heaven except to live BY FAITH and to accept the FREE GIFT of Grace through Jesus Christ then WHY would I need to forgive myself anyway?

Wouldn't Jesus or God understand me that I cannot forgive myself so that His forgiveness would be sufficient, just as His grace is sufficient for me?

People tell me all the time that if I can't ever forgive myself then I will never be saved.

Oh well.

If I wind up in Hell then, as David says in Psalm 139:8, "if I make my bed in Hell, behold Thou art there."

Your not required to forgive yourself, that is God's job not yours. Seek out, what is your job, and fulfil it, and you will be forgiven.

Listen to the Word's of Christ, in the Book of Matthew, when he speaks of forgiveness. Do not be wise or think yourself intelligent, but crawl as a newborn, and you will know what is required of you.

If you read Revelation you will see we are in the era of the Laodicean church (rich and increased in goods and have need of nothing) so NO I do not listen to "pastors" only Father God's Holy Spirit via my human spirit. Man today is mostly deceived by "the god of this world".

I call to mind my iniquities and transgressions many many times every single day and when I do I earnestly ask Jesus Christ to forgive me and help me not to sin. I have not learned to fully turn away from my sins because most of them are 'addictions' and I have not found the strength to give them up completely without slipping up and sinning again. Will I ever stop sinning completely?

It sounds to me that you're listening to Ms. Betty too much.

If you carry guilt for your past misdeeds, then rectify for them. If you are unable to rectify then attempt to balance by an equal gesture of good works

Which you are doing. Give yourself a break.

Yes, I am. I hate my sin but I don't hate it enough to stop sinning. I mean I'd be lying if I said I didn't love my sinful nature in some way. I have to be honest with myself and be honest in front of God. I have confessed all this before. But I cannot STOP sinning by my own strength. The more I try, the more I sin; the less I try, the less I sin.

I don't just forgive my enemies.

I learn to see myself in them.

I see that I am no better or worse.

That I cannot judge them. But rather, through Christ, I learn to love them and pray for them and hope that they be saved and find the peace of the Lord in their hearts.

I have had to forgive and learn to love MANY enemies in my life.

I fail and slip up from time to time.

I can be too prideful, too arrogant, too unforgiving.

But the Lord always corrects this in me and I learn to forgive and to love.

Ask the big man to help you and remember it is not a contest to see who is the best and the holiest. I think it is pretty clear God likes people who are a bit rough around the edges. It will take time but you are on the right path brother. Go easy on yourself and remember it is not your place to judge people, especially yourself.

A loving God wouldn't condemn you to Hell. Love forgives all sins.

However having said that I think we condemn ourselves through reliving our sins into seeking forgiveness. However it is us, not God who condemns us by showing us our effects on others and our guilt damns us.

If you're struggling with addiction you need to forgive yourself for your sins, you're only sinning against yourself.

I think you should accept you're a sinner and may never make good on the harm you've caused others. But you have to stop sinning against yourself before you can forgive. (I should point out that you're likely to never forgive yourself if feel shame or guilt about your actions as your thoughts may condemn you for your actions.)

Letting go of any addiction may be hard, but it's in your best interest. And you'll probably think or feel afterwards that you deserve forgiveness.

 Quoting: Publican

You have only one Teacher, that is Jesus Christ. Seek what he taught on what WE MUST DO, in order to be forgiven. It is right there in the Book of Matthew.

Know what kind of Teacher, what kind of Master, Jesus Christ is, what he demanded we do, what he taught, what his Doctrine is, the Doctrine of his Father, and you will know the answer to your question.

For if your Master hates liquor and loves wine, and he commanded you to bring him wine, and yet you brought him liquor, how would you be rewarded? With a lash of the whip.

If your Master commanded you to be as brethren before him, equal's before Christ, and condemned those who made merchandise of his flock, are those whom you sought guidance from to be celebrated by such a master or condemned?

Find me a passage, where you are required to forgive yourself.

If you have trouble reading, and learn more easily by listening, wash your face with cold water, and go to youtube and look up "Gospel of Matthew kjv", and an excellent video is there.

Personally, I listen to First Peter, of this production series, every Sabbath, and sometimes when in a bad mood, for whatever reason.

Re: If I cannot accept forgiveness will I always fail as a Christian? (Serious, life or death question)
I have found this audio by Andrew Murray on divine healing to be extremely helpful with respect to "bodily" sin...and addictions, I think would fall into this category. Make no mistake, addictions are not just drugs, alcohol, or cigarettes: ALL the things of this world can be addictions if they are not conducted ONLY for the glory of God, in Jesus name -- Amen... And for the Glory of God is not just a saying.

Murray discusses the role of the body and it's very clear that divine healing WILL NOT take place from the Holy Spirit (freedom from addiction, for example) until we release our physical body, soul and spirit completely to the Lord. Our bodies are not ours; we are His creation alone and in love and obedience, we submit to His Will alone. The physical building that is a church is NOT as Holy (man-made - a creations creation) than the Creation of God (Man) with His very Spirit breathed into us. The discussion on body, soul, and spirit around the 44 to 1 hour mark is helpful.

One word: Process. Trust that the Lord is working a work within you or you would not be struggling so. BUT You MUST release your ownership of who you think you are.

The video - it's long and extremely insightful.

Easy, just stop sinning, so you don't feel worse about yourself, sooner or later the good deeds will overwhelm and forgiveness will be an easy thing to do.

Then you must follow the ONE teaching no one pays attention too.

"then go and sin no more"... NO ONE can do this. Because they all believe that they can sin over and over, and get forgiven over and over. Which is a lie. You only get ONE shot. If you go back to sin, then there you stay.

Every pastor I've ever tried to talk to or confide in and get guidance from has told me I have to forgive myself.

Am I listening to false teachers?

The verse that comes to mind is in Matthew 6:15 that says "But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive yours."

I have been told time and time again that this INCLUDES FORGIVING YOURSELF.

Also if I am my own worst enemy (which is very true at times) then I must, according to Matthew 5:44, "love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you," and that includes loving, praying for and forgiving myself.

If I hate myself how can I love my neighbor as I am called to love as I love myself?

Do you see what I'm saying?

I don't just forgive my enemies.

I learn to see myself in them.

I see that I am no better or worse.

That I cannot judge them. But rather, through Christ, I learn to love them and pray for them and hope that they be saved and find the peace of the Lord in their hearts.

I have had to forgive and learn to love MANY enemies in my life.

I fail and slip up from time to time.

I can be too prideful, too arrogant, too unforgiving.

But the Lord always corrects this in me and I learn to forgive and to love.

That's grand stuff - sounds like you're totally on the right track. One thing I was shown a long time ago was that the directive to forgive my enemies includes a call to forgive myself. We're sometimes prone to hold animosity towards ourselves just like we do towards other people who wrong us (or whom we merely perceive to have wronged us).

The awareness of our imperfection is symbolized in the camel hair tunic John the Baptist wore. It's an uncomfortable weave, irritating the skin and physically mimicking a pricked conscience. This stage is totally part of the program, and yes you will get past it. Sounds like you're learning, you're sensitive, and you're in tune. Best advice would be to simply learn to relax - get accustomed to being accepted because the "old you" whom you despise is a dead creature. But he won't accept that, so ironically he fights to remain on our internal "throne" which rightly belongs to Jesus. Renewing the mind, retraining our outlook doesn't happen overnight, not for most of us.

This statement may sound a little "new agey", but the battle you're fighting is more or less an illusion. Christ is being formed in us - a reproduction of Himself. . .and the stuff you're dealing with will eventually seem like a mere hiccup of infancy.

There's a classic allegory novel called Hinds Feet on High Places which I recommend. . .it's a great look at this journey of change we're called to.

Is this even possible?

You're right. No one, not even myself, pays attention to this.

I'm told time and time and time again that it ISN'T POSSIBLE and that if I could just 'go and sin no more' than I wouldn't need Christ to die for my sins!?

I don't know HOW to stop sinning.
