The biblical concept of virginity is grossly misunderstood - it is talking about a moral responsibility towards the community; to be fair everyone was virgin in one sense or the other\; taken in with acceptance when the responsibility was acknowledged - or sent out to learn when errors were made.

The concept of mother Mary was such that a decision was made to send those who had been kept in darkness to learn - into light when they understood light; the requirement of acceptance into unity with the community. And those erring were crossed into the place of learning for their darkness - their spiritual lacking or unawareness - so they could learn and understand the requirement - for the good of the whole.


It is such a shame a rape victim feel lesser in the way virginity is perceived sexually and not with respect to the timeline of growth along life's journey.

A rape victim is not lesser in any way - the rapist is lesser.


Biblically it is the rape victim who would be condemned and not the innocent - this is so misunderstood and physical virginity is over rated as is sexuality in so many respects the measurement is about the soul - the kindness a person has - the empathy - the endeavour.

The first to offer a solution was the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James, written about 150 AD. According to the bishop of Salamis, Epiphanius, in his work The Panarion (AD 374-375) "Joseph became the father of James and his three brothers (Joses, Simeon, Judah) and two sisters (a Salome and a Mary) or (a Salome and an Anna) with James being the elder sibling. James and his siblings were not children of Mary but were Joseph's children from a previous marriage. After Joseph's first wife died, many years later when he was eighty, "he took Mary (mother of Jesus)".

Eusebius of Caesarea relates in his Church History (Book III, ch. 11) that "Hegesippus records that Clopas was a brother of Joseph and an uncle of Jesus." Epiphanius adds that Joseph and Cleopas were brothers, sons of "Jacob, surnamed Panther."

The Catholic Encyclopedia citing the texts contained in the apocryphal writings writes that:
