Me thinks if you are having problems defending your food supply from a squirrel, it really does not matter what you do to store your food, you are raider fodder.

You can live off the land all you want eating bland plants, but there is a reason certain people hold specific items as high value. Taste, escape, comfort. It's been discussed before. High value items go for a lot for desperate people.

Get a cheap or free nonworking fridge or freezer and store it all in there. Might want to install a padlock on it. It will keep light and air out and prevent temperature extremes.

I think there's a bunch of idiots on the site.....who can't spell the word moron, yet they call everyone else a MORAN. I could spell words I never read in spelling bee's. I just did it and I won. I wonder daily if I am dealing with the idiot class who didn't finish basic reading. But I'm subscribed to this for what reason?

I'm sure OP can adapt. We all can.

I'm just like the OP. I can't handle critters in close proximity of my home or inside. It's supposed to be my space. I get either get completely frozen with fear or run for my life.

It's different though when you aren't home. Camping or whatever, in nature, you are visiting/invading their space, their home. For me the fear goes away almost completely. Unless it's like a pack of coyotes or a bear or a moose or something.

Re: Where do you store your survival food? PROBLEM.
In the woods, I let them keep their antlers in the winter. The pigs are like rabbits, you have to blast some just to keep populations down. Scared of Raccoons, you know you can eat them also, we leave them for the Coyotes and Bobtails. Possum cooked Granny style isn't to bad, armadillo is pretty good eating but I think against the law. Occasionally we get some exotics, like Red Buck, Black Buck, Fallow Deer, and every great once in awhile real live buffalo wanders in. Live in a place people have survived for thousands of years, food is usually not an issue. Water is the problem, that's why we stock 4 or 5 cases of good old American Whiskey, and Moonshine. For killing the bacteria. Besides water is for bathing, whiskey is much better.

I use 5 gallon buckets with lids.

But can't wild animals tear through anything. I've seen them demolish trash bags in trash cans.
 Quoting: trutherchick

Can't beat old-fashioned metal dustbins. I use these in my feed room, rats can't touch them. Some come with clamps on the lids.

I've had big rats eat thru my 5 gallon plastic bucket. But it takes them a while.

I've tried every kind of trap known to man and the ONLY thing I've found that works every time consistently is rat poison. They will take it back to their nest and feed it to their whole family and they are all gone quickly.

In my opinion, if you are serious about protecting your food, get rat poison. They make pet resistant rat poison containers and most dog food has the antidote for rat poison.

You may wish to store your food in metal barrels, such as a 55 gallon sized one with a removable lid. Varmit proof.
You guest sounds like a squirrel, or possibly a chipmunk. Maybe leave the door open and he will leave.
Good luck!
 Quoting: Canttakeitnomo 73624677

To evict this varmint, try this. Open the garage door so the unwanted
Guest has a clear exit. Get a paper plate and put a couple of tablespoons of peanut butter on the plate. Set the plate 6-7 feet outside the door. Keep your distance and watch. Once it takes the bait, close the garage door.

My extra food is in my neighbor's house.

But he doesn't know it yet.

Re: Where do you store your survival food? PROBLEM.
I have 8 months of food stored and contained in my garage. All sealed, some rice bags are not, and zip loc bags have health food powder supplements. HOWEVER, I went in my garage to get something and as the garage door was opening I see this small animal scurry up to the rafters off of my supplies!!!!! Fuck. It stayed in the rafters staring at me standing up, while one side of its face was hidden behind a piece of wood. It had a bushy tail I believe and it was grey and white. Wild animals scare the crap out of me so I ran for it and shut it back in the garage.

I spent thousands on this food over time. Where am I supposed to store it. And, who do I call to get rid of the demon in my garage. Isn't Pest control only bugs? I don't deal with spiders, bugs, or wild animals. Help please with this problem and how to solve it from happening in the future.

If your scared of a critter, what's the point in prepping?

U might be in a situation where u have to eat the son of b*tch just to live.

Matter of fact just eat it that's how u know if u got what it takes. If not sell all your preps and get a new hobby.

Go to your local pool service company and ask them for their empty chlorine containers.

VERY durable, large and secure.

Re: Where do you store your survival food? PROBLEM.
Your solution:

Go to local feed store and buy what's called Fly Bait. It's blue pebbles used to keep flies under control on farms.

Take some of those blue pebbles and mix with coke a cola. Put in a short cup, mix gently, and glue it to the rafters.

Then watch dead varmints rain from above.

Shit is highly poisonous. Use with caution. Varmints can't resist the concoction.

Wow, you are toast.

Do you plan to still eat the food?

Next time, put it all in a metal bucket.

You spent thousands on this food as well, seriously?

What did your husband say?

Damn, nevermind.

Re: Where do you store your survival food? PROBLEM.
I put my dog and cat food in metal trashcans in my pantry but somehow ants keep getting into it. Those tiny ants amaze me with their ability to get into things. One time I had put a wrapped lollipop in a small tightly lidded tin and when I went back to get it a couple of days later those darn ants had found a way in. I had to really struggle to get the lid off so not sure how the heck they did it. Bugs and critters are gonna find a way to get your stuff. Nevermind the bugs that actually hatch out in your grains if you don't use mylar bags, etc.
