Srsly, what KIND of people believe that NASA could POSSIBLY make a live broadcast from the Moon in 1969??

Let's think about this with a quick back-of-the-envelope comparative analysis. The Parkes Australian antenna was almost 200' across.

Capturing a 5w, 1 mhz wide QPSK signal from LEO satellites 2,000 miles line of sight is routine on S-band. The antenna I'm thinking of is 12' diameter.

So... assuming a 12 db gain from the LEM directional antenna, 6 db power over 5w from the LEM (23w), and 24 db aperture gain over the 12' antenna I spoke of, that gives you 42 db overall gain. That's 7 distance doublings over 2,000 miles - or 256,000 miles.

Add onto that the better LNA for the Parkes antenna.
