It will be too painful in my opinion for you to do it . Putting down my cat was so hard but he was so sick could barely move anymore . My best friend . This thread is making me cry I hope you will be okay OP. |

And stay with him until he goes so you are the last thing he sees and is at peace. Truth-seeker, trying to figure out how to get out of this matrix...in the meantime, #MAGA! |

Go that route if you possibly can, so he can pass peacefully away in your lap on the couch. |

Also, sometimes they will come out to the car, and do it, as well. Saves on the trauma of being marched into the Vet with all the other dogs barking, smells, etc. You want his last moments to be peaceful. Wish you all the best. It is difficult, but it is our responsibility. They look to us to do this tough act so they don't suffer. I'd complain more, but I'm too busy being blessed. |

Not that I really want to contemplate the details, mind you; I'll take it on faith that whatever it is, it's serious, not merely a matter of convenience for you. Don't take that wrong . . . it's just that I've heard stories about (and witnessed firsthand) pets whose owners go into discard mode the moment they detect a sign that their friend is past their prime. "It's all gonna be downhill from here on out, may as well get it over with now." Whenever I've chosen a dogmate, it's always been to have and to hold, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, 'til death do us part. 15 years is a good long life for a big dog. But 16 years would be better, unless every day was agony (but even then, my dogs have clearly been willing to tolerate some measure of pain, in exchange for getting the required patting and verbal massaging). Now: as far as dealing with the matter yourself, I can't recommend that. I've grappled with the notion of taking a buddy for one last walk in the woods, and I've come to the conclusion that I could not do it. If he'd gotten run over by a semi, well, then I think I could step in (although it would NOT be easy), but to go out scaring up rabbits and then to have to whisper "so long, pal" . . . nope, couldn't do it. I came up with a scheme a few years ago that involved starting fluid and some shop rags. You can probably figure out where my scheme would have led. I think it probably would work. Slower than the vet, but completely painless, I'd think. The only problem that I foresaw was "what if he doesn't care for smell and won't cooperate at ALL?" At the time, he was pretty much immobile, but not so immobile that he couldn't have wriggled his nose out of the shop rags. But this never came to pass, and his time came the natural way. There's no good way of looking at this. Going to the vet isn't good, having the vet make a housecall isn't good, DIY chloroform (or ether) isn't good. Waiting for the day isn't good, either. There comes a time when we're all going to be wondering if today's the day, though, unless we're lucky enough to have "the day" sneak up on us. Depending on the situation, there are times when Dr. Kevorkian's methods could be a blessing. I'd want to be consulted, however, before anyone took that step on my behalf. |

He had a stroke 2 years ago so always falls down. Won't eat much, getting really skinny, can't control BM. Plus his eyes tell me. He misses his two female friends and is all alone with me. Funny you should mention Jack. I knew him and his sisters. I used to service & refill his oxygen tanks. I can get what I need from the Internet and I've experience with shooting up, and I know where to stick him. Just don't know how to discard him. Will we even know we were alive when we're dead? Where Eagles Dare Metal-American User ID: 69718773 United States 01/05/2017 11:16 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Please take him to the vet. We recently went through the same pain with our little girl, but it was the most humane thing to do. We gave her a great last day, even though she didn't eat much of her chicken and rice (her favorite "people food"). We held her while the vet did his thing, and both cried considerably. I feel that it was the right thing to do, and little Annie no longer winds up sitting in her own pee. We had her cremated, and she is in our back yard. I still miss her, but it was what was best (I think). My last one - died with me holding her - I bathed her in warm water, gently dried her off, and put her in her bed wrapped in a special blanket. I'll always be glad I did that. If you lean to the vet, some vets will make "house calls" for such things. |

I am sorry for what you have to go through! I was in the same position you were in a few years ago with my Blue Healer I had had for 15 years. I didn't like the veterinarian and to top it off they wanted $400 and they werent gonna let me take him home afterward. I used a double action .38 but I think a .22 would have worked too. You want to use a double action or gun with a magazine because you want to do two shots very quickly in the top of the head. Cook him his favorite food and do it while he's distracted. Yes, I do have tears streaming down my face! |
Deplorable Ralph--a house dog User ID: 30150243 United States 01/05/2017 11:51 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So sorry, OP. If they are eating and drinking water, peeing and pooping, and not in unbearable pain...it is not time yet. Talk to your vet about details on what they do for this. Start calling local animal rescue groups for referrals if you do not like your vet's methods for dealing with euthanasia.
