I'm a 4th generation Montanan. Wages are low and property prices are high in the NW where I'm from. Had to move away to make a living. Just bought some property with my brother, and am working on a tele-commute snowbird plan. Florida in the winter and Montana in the summer!! Wonderful childhood in a very small town, great people! Unless you marry a rancher or go to college to be a teacher, there's really no way to make a living there, unfortunately. I had to leave when I was 20. A few years back I decided to leave IL and when determining where to go, I eliminated Montana as an option due to the caldera risk and lack of work, but I consider myself a Montanan and still miss it! |

Quoting: upyoursnwo Yes as my Daddy used to always say.. "You can't eat the scenery." As far as risk goes, I figure what are the odds a caldera event would occur in next 40 years? Mt. St. Helens was far smaller than a super-eruption, but I was 200 mi NW when it blew and didn't get anything but a dusting after it had already traveled around the world. Since a distance of 450 miles and the Continental Divide is between NW MT and Yellowstone, I think it would be a pretty safe place. Anything more than that and who cares. Miss Scarlett In The Library User ID: 73739619 United States 01/07/2017 11:07 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hey if any of you like history.... My ancestors came to MT during the gold rush of the 1860's. Ol' Uncle Levi ran a mule train from the mouth of the Columbia to the gold mining camps. One of my ancestors wrote a book on the adventures of some of my family. They left Lyndon IL in 1850 for the California gold fields and it includes excerpts of my GGGrandfather's diary during their crossing. It also covers his brother drifting up into MT and claimed he was in the audience when they hung Henry Plummer. Anyhewww I have this 75 page book and committed to transcribe it this month. If anyone wants to check it out, I'll post it online.
