Hurricane force = 73mph or more. Nothing about 175mph winds.

I've seen two 10 foot dumps in Tahoe, and there was a pretty famous one a while back too.
It happens.
I've seen snow in July in the Sierra.

The only thing false was the prediction of 100 mph gusts which reached 175mph at 2 ski resorts.
My kids are up there right now pissed Because all the lifts are closed due to wind.

Winds were still gusting at well over 100 mph early Monday morning, and the National Weather Forecast office in Reno predicts the conditions will continue through Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

The most impressive gusts blew at 173 mph on a Squaw Valley summit and 175 mph atop a peak in Alpine Meadows.

These bursts were far stronger than the 110 mph winds that were forecast to be the record-breakers for the day.

I used to live in South Lake Tahoe where I briefly sold timeshare at the Ridge Resort. Craziest job I ever had. Anyway I once gave a tour at night in 80 mile per hour winds. Barely could stand. 175 mph?? And, 5-10 feet of snow?? Yikes! Still got some friends there. Man, this is already a tough winter.

Was a nice storm.

I forget the year, but several years ago at Mammoth the (Ski Patrol instrumentation) recorded one or more winds gusting to 201 mph at the top of the 11,053' summit (TOTW, above Climax). Winds recorded lower down, at the upper-terminus of Chair 3 were 162 mph, I think. Lots of glass windows in the Patrol building and the enclosure wind-shielding at nearby 23 were obviously broken. The whole Mountain was closed that day of course.

If you don't like wind while skiing, avoid Mammoth Mt (huge slope-exposure and Venturi-affect)!

I've always heard that Squaw's winds were only slightly less.

Damn that's stronger wind speeds than we see even in Mt. Washington

But Mt Washington still has Mammoth beat for the All-Time highest speeds recorded.

Mammoth is incredibly windy at times tho. Makes for great 'wind-buffed' powder days after a storm rolls thru!

201 mph. Holy Shit! If thats true that would probably be almost like an F5 tornado at least F4 anyway. Hell even 175 mph is category 5 hurricane force. Sounds like they get some wicked windstorms up on in the Sierra Nevadas.
