The ingrained hatred toward Muslims would be a "second witness" in everyone's minds. Of course they did it, those evil bastards. 2) It would rally all the conservatives into war against Arabs in general. Only total genocide would satisfy us. 3) The ensuing war would be a big enough diversion to make us all stop talking about the evil deeds of the PTB that keep coming to light. 4) It would, of course, require Martial Law, which is a goal of anyone who wants and needs autonomy to do whatever they want. There is a saying I read once... can't find it now... something about it taking two people in order to make a lie successful: The person telling it, and the person who chooses to believe it. They need a lie we "want" to believe. This could be it.
