I am a HUGE Blues fan !!! Wow, great link, she Rocks !!!
As for "Sat. Night Fishfry" I've never heard of it and can't comment because I will NOT refister to hear free music - if you got a free link, okay. I tried a few that were on the page this guy linked and they all wanted me to register, no thanks.

After ripping off so much, Napster has a lot of nerve to play this game now.

Great find, still Robert did it first !!!

This had to be in the 40s or 50s. Look at her albums. I doubt someone can tell what guitar that is, even so, the 60s model guitar could be based on the one she's playing.

Re: Did this woman invent Rock n Roll?
Cool to see so many Blues / music fans on GLP. Time for a dumb question, sorry I am "borrowing" this ISP so I can't Google myself at the moment. If you please;

In what year did Les Paul invent the electric ?
When did it become commerciually available ?

Rem the song "How High the Moon" ? Les Paul and Mary Ford... From my addmittely limited knowledge of Les, was that the first big radio-play push of his guitar ?

Thanks so much !

Re: Did this woman invent Rock n Roll?
The guitar is a Gibson SG Custom (3 pickups). First produced in 1960 (tho it wasn't called an SG yet). It was a thinner, double cutaway version of the Les Paul. It was made famous by Pete Townsend of The Who and Angus Young of AC/DC. The SG is a very smooth-playing guitar.
There is a picture of one on this page:

Regardless of when it was (most likely early 60s), she is an incredible musician. She was using a tube amp with the distortion cranked up a good bit. I was kind of disappointed that the chorus didn't join in and the band was not visible. However, she was a great player with enough skill to put most other players to shame. That is a great video and it is fortunate that it still exists. Thanks for sharing it with us!

If you want to see someone who was, in my opinion, the finest jazz guitarist ever, go to: [link to www.about-django.com]
Django Reinhardt was a gypsy with a crippled left hand, and made the most beautiful swing jazz music I've ever heard. (Also check out Woody Allen's Sweet and Lowdown which is a tribute to him).

Re: Did this woman invent Rock n Roll?
I agree that video is early sixties, a woman in the background is wearing horn rimmed glasses, and I have a pic of my mama circa 1960 wearing them, cause she said they were all the rage then. She might have made the song before then, and no doubt, judging from her age, she has probably been twangin that guitar for some years. Loved that Video! But I agree, early sixties had to be when it was made.

Re: Did this woman invent Rock n Roll?
In my opinion, rock and roll was invented with the release of Meade "Lux" Lewis' "Honky Tonk Train" in 1926. Tharpe ia great player and singer and DEFINITELY had a hand in Rock and Roll's fruition. I am glad you are doing this research...ELVIS SUCKS!!!!!!!

Jimi played a right handed Fender Strat, left handed( it was strung left handed with the sixth string and tuners top side} most of the time and then destroyed them on stage with lighter fluid and flame, which = fire or he axed them on the stage.
BTW: I have all the Jimi videos known to mankind.

Hey thanks to everyone for their input, even if you don't agree with the thread title, you must admit this woman was special! After some more digging I found a book about her " Shout, Sister, Shout!: The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe" She is now buried in an unmarked grave in Philadelphia, maybe this book and some of you will spread the word about this forgotten trailblazer, Rock on Sister Rosetta!
For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

{b]That video is so wrong...I love it.

Black people don't play instruments anymore.

Why the hell not?

Because they're Lazy ass punks.

They ripped-off other artists with sampling, then use a stupid drum machine with cheesy drum sounds and they have no clue what a fucking equalizer is, which is probably why they can't sing either, they talk shit.

I can't believe stupid people bought their crap music.

You ruined radio...

I take it that you've never heard of Jazz, especially
Modern Jazz. Nor have you seem to have heard of The
Black Eyed Peas and other groups like them.
 Quoting: DrPostman

Jazz is just too silly...But,I've seem some Live that was good. Seems too note'y and no feel'y.

I don't recall see the Peas playing an actual instrument, but I do remember a guitar somewhere when they were on SNL. It was probably just for show since I didn't hear it in the mix.

Here's some remarkable piano sheet music form The Peas [link to www.8notes.com]

I rest my case...

Big Business (mostly jews) did that not the "blacks".
It's all, corporate now. Greed and manipilationo of the masses. I have personal friends you have walked away from the music businees due too what they've seen happen. It's mind control, made to take money from sheep. Discovering REAL music has always been a hobby, and a passion of mine. The lower end today (I LIVE in the inner city) have been dumbed down by culture and public education, it's not all their fault. But certainlyt a bad breed brooding, dumb as rocks with easy access to drugs and weapons. Middle class hard working tax payers and a corrupt gov't made it so.

God help us all.
AMERICA IS DOOMED
