What is true love to me? It’s easier to start with what it isn’t, (but what might accompany it).
• It isn’t physical attraction or satisfaction of needs.
• It isn’t the “falling in love” which is a chemical euphoria fueled by endorphins when we are with or think about our lover.
• It isn’t conditional love, which loves only as long as our lover is willing or able to meet our needs, or begins hurting us.
• It doesn’t depend on compatibility.
• It isn’t a feeling or an action.

I was very interested in spiritual matters as a child and teenager; (I wanted to know what life was really about.). Christianity teaches that we should love everyone, especially our enemies. I often wondered how a person could have heartfelt unconditional love for others he did not know or even like. It was through all the volunteer work I did while I was in high school and college, that I discovered that unconditional love is possible when we are able to understand and feel that others are just like ourselves, -only with different circumstances, traits, and values. I realized that though I didn’t know the particulars of a stranger’s life, I DID know them because they were as human as I was, -just as you can value children because you were once one. I had the choice to value and love people and their lives for the same reasons I valued and loved myself and my own life.

True love is a clear vision developed over time of the innate preciousness of another person, which is so powerful, it is seared into our heart forever. That vision is so heartfelt that it becomes a part of us and we can never forget it. It is the actual seeing of another’s humanity, -that they have feelings, hopes, concerns, etc. as we have, -just different ones. We feel in our heart that even if we have to sacrifice without the things we need, giving from our life or living for them is worth the same as anything we can do for ourselves.

It is the same love, whether it is for our spouses, parents, children, siblings, or friends. It is just felt and expressed appropriately to the person we love. If you love your mother, you will always love her and care about her, even if you feel hurt by her or angry toward her. That is because you will always see and know HER beyond her limitations. Similarly, a loving mother will always love her children no matter what they do. That is because, having known them all their lives, she sees their precious individuality more powerfully than anything else about them.

Without true love, caring is only a social contract, -something is always eventually hoped for or needed in return. True love is not influenced by what the loved one does to us or doesn’t do with us. One of its children is true care, which doesn’t seek recompense; it is only for the other, a free gift that makes the giver happy because the giver is contributing to a life he feels is just as precious as his own.

Lastly, I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “You can’t love someone else unless you love yourself first.”. Do you see why that is true, from what I’ve said above? True love sees beauty and value in the other equal to the beauty and value they see in themselves. People who cannot find beauty and value in themselves cannot truly appreciate another person either.
