They thought I had 'gone retarded' I no longer associate with those guys and I dont miss them either. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 16887161 United States 02/04/2017 09:08 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I started building things at a pretty early age. My dad was re-building a house when I was really young and I remember helping with allot of stuff. While in high-school I was an apprentice in a boat-building shop, I mostly swept the floor and did the bitch work, but I did learn a number of techniques unique to boats/yachts. When I changed jobs, I got an entry level job in a shop that did mostly home kitchens and furniture. I started as a finisher, but was able to move up to the woodworking stuff quickly. The guys in that shop were true OG's, and they taught me allot. It took about five years before I was able to work independently. |

My shop rate is 80$/hr, and my on-site rate for yacht carpentry is 100. I have work lined up for at least the next two years. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16887161 I have never had problems finding employment, I have been doing this kind of work for about ten years and have really enjoyed learning various woodworking techniques. I started doing this after working in IT/tech support/database management for far too long. I'm so much happier now, the IT jobs are soul-crushing and dont even require much skill. The best thing I ever did for my-self was to unplug from the digital world. I still use a smart phone, but I no longer spend hours and hours staring at a screen. The worst part is that you never get any real gratitude from employers or clients. If your current job sucks' quitting and moving on to something else may be the best thing you could do for your self. I too am an IT refugee! I did client server engineering/outsourcing as we slowly placed all of the IT infrastructure of the US to India and Brazil. Indeed it was soul crushing. I am now learning to become an electrician, and I am from the northeastern tip of new england. Cheers on your new career and Go Pats! |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 73455580 United States 02/04/2017 09:25 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was thinking the same thing. I built custom and production homes for 13 years and in 2009 I had to hang up my tool bags. It's been a brutal cut-throat economy when it comes to construction. My main concern is the Fed raising interest rates which I hear is in the cards. |

Once you hit 40 they don't want to even interview you though I was Cisco certified. I got into mortgages and had a pretty rough few years trying to make money. Getting experience is a pain and I lost about all that I owned due to the low pay. It is getting better now thankfully. |

Good luck getting a job in the trades when the country is flooded with illegal aliens. I've heard electricians, plumbers and brick layers have a difficult time getting work. I guess if you want to work for 2 dollars an hour you might be okay. |
