Re: California's Lake Oroville Main Spillway Severely Damaged/Eroded. Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed
shutting the MS will cause the lake to rapidly fill again...especially with the melt off on the way and the full reservoirs above this dam. They better get that MS open ASAP closing too long would will force ES spill. This situation is far from over and it will be the most popular thread again next week.

Maybe the cracks in the MS gateway was created when they tried to shut the gates.

Re: California's Lake Oroville Main Spillway Severely Damaged/Eroded. Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed
Been gone awhile, anyone have a brief and to the point rundown on the status of everything? Thanks in advance.
 Quoting: Forty Six & 2

Main Spillway is still operating at 50,000. They show a scheduled reduction to 46,000 but it hasn't happened yet.

Current elevation is 841.92 and decreasing.

Advisory evacuation still in place.

Forecast is still clear, with a few drizzles likely over the next couple of days.

DWR apparently changed their radio frequency, no updates being heard on the scanner. I currently have my radio running in 'stalker' mode to see what might hear. Nothing yet.

No word on any progress clearing the diversion pool to enable the power plant operation.
 Quoting: Crunch62

Signal stalker is good for nearby, 500' away transmissions. I would suggest a band scan, where it samples sequentially every frequency in that band, then locks onto a transmission (or a sideband, as often times happens).

If you have software like Scancat, the scanner can be easily programmed to listen to just one frequency band. Most scanners are a nightmare to program via the front buttons.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69723190

Especially with a fading/dead display as mine has. It is an older unit, a PRO-97. I believe it can be programmed via a PC, but I don't have a cable or the SW.
 Quoting: Crunch62

I have one as well, then upgraded to the 668. My '97 is relegated to signal stalker duty.

Radio Shack used to sell a cable and Scancat lite. Probably can get one on e-bay for $20.

Deep down inside you believe this dam is going to fail. That is obvious due to your emotional attachment.

Do you live nearby? I would understand if you did, the consequences being to large for most people to comprehend.

But of not.....you need a girlfriend.

If they are trying to remain secret, I am pretty certain encryption is used.

Radio technology is very interesting. I am more interested in the hardware reception and developing new methods of radio.

One of my favorites is the rotating mag field receiver. Two toroid inductors, two antennas, then make rotating mag fields opposing each other with current through separate circuit in the two inductors.

Wrap the antenna around an inductor, one for each and have it where one augments the rotating mag field and the other opposes it when a signal is picked up.

Place a coil between the two toroids and that will detect realignment of the magnetic flux.

Close to the toroids, the flux is wound up rotating. In between the mag field turns and becomes linear a the point the rotation changes direction.

When a radio signal is received, one toroid magnifies and the other weakens. Pushing the linear region left/right.

The coil will see the mag field flip 180 degrees producing a strong impulse which leads to the tank circuit or op amp to be furthered along.

It picks up some signal given off by plants when rustled by wind or creature.

This is great news though I am skeptical.

Do they want us to believe several inches of rain just magically disappeared?

If they are holding it back, how long can they?

I heard any levees upstream of Oroville are holding back as much as possible and are at max capacity.

I also learned those levees are designed to keep the flow into the lake as balanced as possible to keep stress off the dam.

Now they do not have that ability, which is why the inflow chart started to look rougher, more ups and downs, IMHO. As the upstream levees were not working to keep the inflow balanced, they were working to keep the inflow as little as possible.

This will be a big problem immediately following the next heavy rain or snow melt event.

Being that FEMA is now involved, and is a component of DHS, could that change things in terms of secure communications?

Declared disaster zone to open federal assistance. Not certain but I can imagine it's not hard to get a military comm set up under such a declaration.

Or they are using cell phones instead of radio. No law against that as far as I know and that is pretty much harder to sniff for the average poster.

Re: California's Lake Oroville Main Spillway Severely Damaged/Eroded. Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed
I heard on line that the name Oroville means ... gold town....
and that beneath the reservoir there are old goldmines !

The main thing to think about is that there are 10 reservoirs that feed into Oroville dam and all of those reservoirs have been sealed off to give the guys at oroville time to repair the slipway or at least pile in the rocks to fill the massive hole being eroded by the water from the slipway ...

time however is running out and those dams are going to have to open the sluices to release the pressure which will mean massive volumes of water soon heading for oroville....

add to that theres no end to the stream of wet weather heading in from the pacific and massive deposits of snow on the hills waiting to melt...

This problem is far from over
If that dam goes the death toll will be in the 1000s and there probably wont be time to evacuate ... it will be like the sunami at fukushima ... the people were trapped in their homes as a killer wave of water and debris rolled in, there was no escape .
