Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed Steel plate will not work. Quoting: Bullwinkle 73897037 Steel pipe would work. I saw a video from an engineer showing how steel pipe could bridge the gap and it would be structurally stronger. The voids between the large pipe could have ever smaller pipes and standard concrete or other sealants to fill the smallest voids. This would eliminate the need to fill the area under the spillway and only need a truss system like on a trestle bridge to hold it up. Well since the spillway gates are cracked this whole MS needs to be abandoned ASAP and another one constructed at the parking lot...this would require raising the ES lip but it's really the only choice...this MS is completely finished. So far there's only been speculation that the spillway gates are cracked ... no proof. |

Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed Thanks for the continued information everyone . Got a lot going on here but trying to check this thread and a couple of vids at least once a day and I'm grateful for the numbers, vids etc. Just found this one and it is mindblowing how different the area at the bottom of the MS is without the water there. Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed I haven't been watching the park dam camera because I know all the activity is happening out of camera view. but, if they might need to use divers, I'll start watching again focusing on the Aux spillway angle to see if any boats approach the chutes from the lake side. I think those stitches are the bent rebar ripped out of the slabs when the breakage tore it apart? |

Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed Is anyone even going to try to hold anyone accountable for the horrible decisions that allowed the MS to become severely damaged in the first place, and the dam to fill all the way up and damage the ES as well??? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71216711 Anyone??? I didn't think so... Ummm.... Can we talk about this? This should be a constant theme on the MSM talk shows. Gee, I wonder why it isn't??? |

Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed At this rate of app. 3 feet per day, and doing that just with snow melt and no rain, the dam will overtop again in 19 days. Of course, they will use the MS again long before that, so it won't happen unless the rainfall and snow melt become unmanageable. The damage looks impressive beneath the MS, but there must be solid rock all the rest of the way up, so as long as the MS gates hold, we should be OK. IF...they do get into a situation where they need to use the ES again, all bets are off. No amount of downhill patching is going to prevent that sucker from blowing out if they get any kind of volume over it for any length of time. |

They are trying to give themselves more cushion for this weekend when the NWS says temps will climb and rainfall of 2.35" is expected Saturday morning into Monday afternoon. |
