Soon there will be less - Payless Shoes to close 1000 stores and file for bankruptcy #economy #jobs
If Payless can't reach a deal with creditors the retailer may consider filing for bankruptcy, Bloomberg's Jodi Xu Klein and Lauren Coleman-Lochner reported Friday.

In January, Reuters reported that Payless was working with attorneys to restructure debt worth roughly $655 million. Later in the month, Payless laid off 165 associates, including 110 employees at the Topeka corporate office, The Topeka-Capital Journal reported.

Payless, like many other retailers, is hurting from a decline in foot traffic to shopping malls.

Earlier in January, The Limited, another apparel brand primarily based in malls, shut down all 250 of its stores and laid off 4,000 workers. Mall staples Sears and Macy's have also announced mass closures this year, with Sears planning to close 150 namesake stores and Kmart stores in 2017 and Macy's planning to shutter another 100 stores.

They sell crappy brands at mall store prices.

They used to sell crappy brands at dirt cheap prices.

Not hard to figure out why they are going under.

Know your market.

Can't be paying retail and food workers the wages you pay skilled craftsman, journeymen.

This minimum wage hike has even hurt the corporations. Besides the little people it was created to target.

Well, not everyone can purchase $150 shoes like you can you liberal fool. The middle class needs less expensive options.

Not only that, it is a women's shoe store, with a small cupboard for a couple of men's shoes. So it is kind of like wtf?

Better off going to Kmart or Walmart, for shoes.

About 13 years so I walked in there and bought 2 pairs for my children. There was an issue with my debit card transaction and it had to be run multiple times. I was charged twice.

I called them up to report the error. I got told "Too bad. Talk to your credit union." I had to go to the credit union, wait for a cube lady, get told to file a police report, return to credit union with it, wait for cube lady agin, file some forms and wait for the dispute to resolve.

A half day off from work total. I said I would never return and never did. If you forget your customer, the customers forget you.
They never thought she would lose. Now they all lose.

In all honesty, their current business model sucks. they need to modernize, and develop onsite, 3d printers, to make shoes as needed.

Single product retail outlets, have to stay ahead of the curve, in order to stay in business.

That's my point...

They have been jacking up their prices over the last few years, making other shoe stores a better option for family budgets.

They have priced themselves out of the affordable shoe market.
