Why don't conservatives have tattoos? | |

He said no. His father said "then I think it's good for you to get into the navy if you get a tattoo because a tattoo is a sailor or a thug thing and I do not have a thug son." Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74001021 Yep, this is the mentality of those of us who are 60 plus in years and the mores of the time. In the 60's & 70's & maybe 80's there was a hepatitis risk assosiated with piercings and tattoos. Until recently, I have always thought of myself as a liberal. No tats or piercings here. Not conservative but I am old school for the most part. Some of us still think tattoos are tacky. To the younger generation, I don't care what you do to your body just have a care. What seems like a good idea now may be one you regret later. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 73904952 United States 02/11/2017 10:24 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | And the tattoo itself is not a sin, the sin is in what leads the person to make the tattoo, which in almost all is vanity. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74001021 I'm sorry, but that statement is absolutely ridiculous -- as ridiculous as saying that showering regularly; dressing nicely and professionally; wearing jewelry; wearing make-up; dyeing or styling one's hair (even just combing it); and/or exercising to keep one's body in shape is pure "vanity". Our bodies are merely physical vessels for our souls, and it's absurd to think that the act of decorating that vessel is somehow sinful. Furthermore, is a person who cleans and decorates their home so that it will be a welcome place for visitors (and their family) committing the "sin" of "vanity"? Of course not. In addition, I don't have any tattoos, myself, but I know quite a few Christians who got them as a sincere expression of their faith. (For instance, they have crosses, depictions of Jesus, etc.) I also know many conservative military veterans who got them as a reminder of their fallen friends and all that they had learned, as well as other people who got tattoos to remind them of their lost loved ones and the struggles that they had overcome, in life. It sounds like the proverbial horse that you're on is much too high, and that it might do you some good to be more humble and less judgemental. Actually, that poster's statement was not considered ridiculous a few generations ago. I was born in the late 30's and grew up at a time when some of the things you mentioned were frowned upon. Personal hygiene or exercising were not viewed as vanity, because they were healthy. But if you did something like color your hair to cover the gray, that would be a miniature scandal. It was not common for Christian women to wear make-up or jewelry (with a wedding ring or timepiece being the exceptions). Even wearing clothes with fancy buttons or too many embellishments was considered vain. You had to walk a fine line. You could maybe get away with one vain decoration as long as it was not too ostentatious, like a little lipstick, a bit of lace, or a brooch, but that was about it. Any more than that, and people would talk. This attitude may have been partially influenced by the great depression. Thriftiness became a major virtue at a time when so many people were left wanting, and that attitude prevailed for a long time afterwards. Women who embellished themselves with many "decorations" were viewed as not only vain, but as decadent spendthrifts. Your statements are completely true -- and thank you for sharing your personal experiences and insights. I actually have many not-so-fond memories of people being shamed for something as minor as using dye to cover up gray hairs, myself, too (and that's likely why I had such a negative reaction to the AC's comment). In light of all of that, I think that society's change in attitude towards people's hygienic and stylistic choices has been a good thing, for the most part. As such, I should clarify that I meant that the original commenter's post seemed ridiculous in this specific day and age, and that it also seemed preposterous (and almost "sinfully" judgemental) for them to falsely assume that "almost all" people get tattoos for sinfully vain reasons. But, yes, the Great Depression definitely had a long-lasting impact on society' attitudes, and people really did have to walk a fine line, just as you said. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74001440 I think the next big booming industry will soon be tattoo removal. as a matter of fact, my son-in-law just got into that business ... and its going gang-busters. Great! I saw a television show not too long ago about a company offering tattoo removals and they too are booming, and have a long waiting list of customers, many of them who are former gang members, or just people with visible tattoos who are finding it to be a problem with getting a good job. |

To me, there's too many tattoos.. in fact almost all of them should be a fucking t-shirt. How the fuck are you gonna walk around with blue flames on your neck region for the rest of your life? I knew of a beautiful girl that did that but I guess it went along with her partying whoring lifestyle so whatever.. I was in court as juror the other day and the prosecutor was an older guy, I'd say upper 60s and i notice he had tattoos on the top of his hand. I couldn't make out what the tattoos were like i wasn't even listening to him anymore but just staring at that ugly gob of discoloration on his hand but i thought that was an odd place to put a tattoo. Could have been a military tattoo but to me any exposed region outside of formal wear is not a good place to put one if you have to have it... Tattoos look like shit when you get old. You have to live with that for the rest of your life. And more and more I see people with tats that look like shit. Yeah I can't help but cringe and notice how it looks like shit and I may think twice about involving them in any project or service I may need because it is an example of their decision making. |

I draw them myself and have no flash art or the "pick one off the wall" art. Has nothing to do with a political or philosophical angle. If you want to judge...fine by all means, but better keep it to yourself or on the safety of the internet. Saying stupid shit to tattooed people in public might not be a wise decision. |
