Quoting: Wash 2.0 Known as Backyard Worlds: Planet Nine, the website contains several images, which were captured by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer mission years ago, that have been turned into flipbook movies. NASA wants the public to hunt for the mysterious Planet Nine, which scientists postulate might be the ninth planet of the solar system. The space agency believes releasing the images to the public will help narrow down the search for Planet Nine. "There are too many images for us to search through by ourselves," NASA said. This planet, which might orbit the sun once every 15,000 years, would be so faint that it evades discovery. - See more at: [link to www.techtimes.com] |

The Deplorable Astromut Senior Forum Moderator 02/17/2017 10:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It's a nice project. WISE data has actually been freely available to the public for years now, this is just a new zooniverse project which does a lot of the setup work for you to make it possible for people to look for moving objects like a planet 9 without having to know anything about how to access or process the raw WISE data. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15292827 Wow, ok, paranoid much? Hey there Astro, can you shed a little light as to why NASA needs help here? Is it simply due to work load? Publicity? Funding? Too much data; automated searches may not pick up everything, while also picking up false positives from image artifacts. Dr. Kuchner has been involved in a number of projects, mainly involving extrasolar planetary systems, and has also been involved in other citizen science projects like Disk Detective. The goal is to do useful science in large datasets too massive for professional astronomers to completely search while also getting the public interested and involved in these subjects. Contrary to popular opinion, NASA is not trying to keep people from finding planet 9. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15292827 Well apparently lately NAZA is outsourcing her researches on crowdsourcing platforms...giving peanuts as awards and actually giving the money to friend. They just annunced the space poop competition winner, competition about technology solution for pee&poo in space. The prize was given to an ex military for a ridiculous system when they have been flood with thousands of projects from high tech universities, engeeners and even common folks. |

I say Yeah, no just send us on wild goose chases using data that won't find it... Maybe it will, maybe it won't, but either way there's bound to be additional undiscovered nearby stars waiting to be found within the data. Astro, Dont you think the Dark Energy Survey would yield better for this when looking for Planet 9 ? Quoting: E420Not necessarily. The DES survey was only supposed to cover about 5000 square degrees of the sky, which is only about 12% of the total sky. [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] |
