Professor Dweeb User ID: 73883602 United States 03/04/2017 11:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I did not see the spot, but earlier in the night, I did see a small star close to the moon. When I saw this thread, I immediately went to check. I saw nothing anomalous, but I did notice that I no longer saw the star. I'm no astronomer, but my guess is that if you keep watching, that star will soon immerge from the opposite side of the moon. It would make sense why it was only observed by OCCAM for 4-5 minutes before disappearing, yet posters are still claiming to see it from their location, Maybe I'm wrong, but if we are looking for the simplest answer... |
Helios Maximus User ID: 70735592 United States 03/04/2017 11:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It's an occultation or near occultation of a bright star. Quoting: Helios Maximus My guess is the red giant Aldebaran, but you'll have to check the current charts for the lunar position from your local coordinates. Aldebaran confirmed-- 5 SUN. ( 3) Moon 0.25° N.N.W. of Aldebaran (85° from Sun in evening sky). 5 SUN. (11:33) First Quarter Moon. Universal Workshop Astronomical Calendar: [link to universalworkshop.com] Mystery solved. OP thought this was a light on the dark side of Luna, but it's not. It's a star 0.25 degrees off the Moon's edge and 65+ light years away. It is a beautiful sight to behold, but not that rare. The Moon may occult or come close in the sky to many stars and planets in the ecliptic plane on occasion. That was some kind of sustained explosion. Quoting: OCCAM'S RAZOR OCCAM Apparently it's a real thing that has been observed in the past... ----- SNIP ----- Transient lunar phenomenon A transient lunar phenomenon (TLP) or lunar transient phenomenon (LTP) is a short-lived light, color, or change in appearance on the surface of the Moon. Claims of short-lived lunar phenomena go back at least 1,000 years, with some having been observed independently by multiple witnesses or reputable scientists. Nevertheless, the majority of transient lunar phenomenon reports are irreproducible and do not possess adequate control experiments that could be used to distinguish among alternative hypotheses to explain their origins. Most lunar scientists will acknowledge that transient events such as outgassing and impact cratering do occur over geologic time: the controversy lies in the frequency of such events. The term was created by Patrick Moore in his co-authorship of NASA Technical Report R-277 Chronological Catalog of Reported Lunar Events, published in 1968. ... Under the list of recorded events there is this one that sounds like your moon light: In 1866, the experienced lunar observer and mapmaker J. F. Julius Schmidt claimed that the Linné crater had changed its appearance. Based on drawings made earlier by J. H. Schröter, as well as personal observations and drawings made between 1841 and 1843, he stated that the crater "at the time of oblique illumination cannot at all be seen" (his emphasis), whereas at high illumination, it was visible as a bright spot. Based on repeat observations, he further stated that "Linné can never be seen under any illumination as a crater of the normal type" and that "a local change has taken place". Today, Linné is visible as a normal young impact crater with a diameter of about 1.5 miles (2.4 km). ----- SNIP ----- Source: [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] Good find.
