Still, there is no conclusive proof that this is algae. A bloom under (or even on top of) the ice at that temperature is very unusual. My guess would be a cyanobacteria that's fluorescing, since it wouldn't need any additional nutrients. But that still doesn't explain the sudden large distribution area. |

The Antarctic Circumpolar Current is the only current that completely circumnavigates the globe. It flows eastwardly and blocks off other water currents from the land mass. This makes it very hard for new organisms to enter or leave antarctica, and it also acts as a temperature barrier. |
