Are all Scientologists basically nut cases?

I don't know if they are nut cases, but Prez Clinton granted them "Tax-Free," status for a religion when it is not: there is NO mention of God throughout all of their literature, which disqualifies them from this status of being a religion.

They are victims of cult mind control as well as being scammed, blackmailed, deceived and lied to constantly while in the cult. Victims.

I took an interest in them for a few years, bought books looking for further answers to life's questions out of curiosity. My thoughts were, "Well if something was so popular with so many people, there has to be SOMETHING to it, right?"

I came to the final conclusion that they try to sell bullshit as with so many other things/people in this screwed up world.

They took the notion of repression from psychology, confession from the catholic church and it is a little like psychiatry minus the drugs. Nutcases, not all I don't imagine. Tax dodgers, swindlers, cult for testing brainwashing and other forms of manipulation. All mostly true.

They have rightly criticized the overuse of psychiatric meds on the populace but they also have a rather litigious reputation to critics of their organization.

They seem about as evil as any of a number of other corporate and religious entities who lust for power and abuse it while portraying themselves as something more benign.
