The exercise comes after Japan strongly condemned North Korea’s latest launch of four ER-Scud ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan, three of which landed in Japan’s exclusive economic zone. Last year, for the first time ever, a North Korea Nodong launch splashed down within Japan’s EEZ as well. The drill on Friday began with loudspeaker broadcasts and siren warnings signaling a ballistic missile launch. The Japanese government is using its nationwide J-Alert civilian warning system, which is also deployed in case of natural disasters — a common occurrence in the earthquake-prone country — to warn civilians of an incoming North Korean attack." Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 69599243 United States 03/17/2017 06:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | China's Most Important South China Sea Military Base Near the picturesque city of Sanya, at the southernmost tip of Hainan Island, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy is methodically preparing itself for the next phase of power projection in the South China Sea. The site in question is the Yulin Naval Base, and it is shaping up to be the most strategically important military base in the South China Sea. In fact, it may already hold the title, depending largely on the current nuclear submarine traffic flowing in and out of Yulin’s underground facility. Theater and point defense assets have been deployed, degaussing and weapons-loading facilities appear operationally ready — as do the administrative buildings, munitions transportation systems, and geological fortifications — and much of the South Sea Fleet’s submarine force has already nestled itself deep into the resident mountain. With a healthy mix of surface vessels, anti-aircraft and anti-ship missile platforms, and both conventional attack and nuclear deterrent submarines, Yulin’s strategic value is steadily rising. And with it rises China’s coercive power in the South China Sea and its surrounding waterways. [link to thediplomat.com] |

In response, Pyongyang accused the US of preparing a “preemptive strike”, according to North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency, KCNA, “If they infringe on the our sovereignty and dignity even a bit, our army will launch merciless ultra-precision strikes from ground, air, sea and underwater,” read the statement. The system is scheduled to be deployed at Seongju County, North Gyeongsang Province by the end of this year. Anti-THAAD banners can be seen on the streets of Gimchon, a neighboring city with a population of 140,000, located 7 km north of the deployment site. "NO THAAD, NO WAR," "We want peace back," some of the banners read. "Let's sell THAAD out of South Korea, and GET RICH!" one said with bitter humor. [link to news.xinhuanet.com] |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 69599243 United States 03/18/2017 01:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Tillerson set for crucial talks in China after hinting at tough stance on N.K. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson arrived in Beijing Saturday for talks with top Chinese officials after a two-day visit to South Korea where he signaled a tougher U.S. policy toward North Korea. The top U.S. diplomat's visit to Beijing, the last leg of his three-nation trip to Asia, came amid diplomatic tensions between the two major powers over the ongoing installation of a U.S. missile defense system in South Korea and differences on how to rein in an increasingly provocative Pyongyang. Tillerson is set to hold a joint press conference with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in the afternoon, according to Beijing officials. During his two-day stay in China, Tillerson is expected to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and State Councilor Yang Jiechi. The two sides are expected to discuss the ongoing deployment of a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery to South Korea, which Beijing has strenuously opposed on the grounds that its powerful radar could be used to monitor its military activities. China has been escalating its economic retaliation over the THAAD deployment against South Korea -- an issue likely to be discussed during Tillerson's talks with Beijing officials. Tillerson has urged China to refrain from taking the retaliatory steps. [link to english.yonhapnews.co.kr] |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 69599243 United States 03/18/2017 01:39 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Japan, Russia to start working on concrete projects on disputed isles Japan and Russia agreed Saturday to begin working on specific projects involving joint economic activity on Russian-held isles claimed by Japan, in the hope such efforts will lead to signing a postwar peace treaty. In the first senior officials' meeting on the issue, the two sides proposed concrete projects in areas such as healthcare and fisheries. But they still need to work out a legal arrangement so as not to undermine their rival claims to sovereignty over the islands. Yet even if joint economic activities begin, that would not guarantee talks on settling the territorial dispute will move forward, as Russia staunchly maintains the isles off Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido are its legitimate territory, and appears more interested in economic gains, Japanese analysts said.
