Portland will build a tiny home in your backyard if you allow a homeless family to live there rent free for 5 years.

If you let them live there for five years, they can claim it as their own possession. Same as if you let people use your driveway, or cut across your yard to take a shortcut to school or whatever. They own the easement eventually.

Happened here. The driveway behind the house was part of the property on the old plans, but they let the neighbors behind use it, and then it was turned over to them, along with several hundred square yards of land around it.

Gone. Those rights will supercede any contract that Portland might promise a landowner, as they are ancient.

Aren't most tiny homes built with composting toilets? I wonder how many property owners wouldn't mind have a stranger's pee and poop being dumped around their backyard. I'm pretty sure they'll build these with "normal" toilets though.

I think this is a great idea as long as it's not used to house illegals.

Not all homeless are drug addicts and alcoholics that destroy everything they touch. There are some good people that are forced to live on the streets for one reason or another.

how about we stop this Trojan Horse, since the gov. of OR just admitted they do not have a place to put them? How about stop the wholesale import of people who have no intention of assimilation?

Pretty soon, streets will look like Paris with filthy mattresses on the ground.

This comment, and the one about how the state won't use their own square miles of state-owned land because they're desperate to avoid giving homesteading rights . . .

All great observations.

Every city has enough abandoned houses that could be repaired instead of building these goofy tiny houses. Why not use the "sweat equity" method, screen applicants, and allow them to help renovate these houses.

Say after 3 years if they are still maintaining the properties and have jobs, and staying away from criminal lives, let them keep the properties.

Would be great life skills they could use and I feel would greatly reduce the people to getting back on the streets. Once you've helped someone raise their self worth, you can't not help but to carry that on in life.

That's because it is. I don't know how many middle or upper middle class families want a tiny house with homeless people in their backyard. What could possibly go wrong?

This is about again, the Left, being unable to think out a plan and actually follow something through. No common sense.

There literally is no reason for homelessness in this country. We could build buildings with one room efficiencies for these people, with the basic sanitary needs and a place to sit, sleep, store their meager belongings and maybe have a friend over. We called them rooming houses when I was a kid, and they were a very effective answer to the needs of whole classes of people who might otherwise be homeless - elderly without family, mentally ill vets, drug addicts & alkies, the extremely poor, etc. It was a way for them to live affordably with dignity and privacy. Because so many of these people now have drug or alkie or mental illness problems, there probably needs to be a security team and maybe a couple of case workers on site, but it's definitely manageable as long as we set realistic goals.

We now have big empty malls and box stores that could be converted over to a project like this and it would be much better than the crazy - and expensive - idea of building a small house in somebody's back yard.

right ... self-deception is really the most destructive form of lying ... if they are such great people, why aren't their families taking care of them ... if they are mentally ill, why doesn't the state do something for them

these people BELIEVE that they are entitled to all the things that the rest of us WORK FOR - and even when you give them a great environment - they don't appreciate it - because they didn't earn it

Here is the basic problem we face in America when it comes to solving any kind of issue:

We don't look to solve problems. We look to MAKE MONEY OFF PROBLEMS. If we end the problem, the money STOPS. Where's the incentive? NOT EVERYTHING CAN BE MONETIZED TO MAKE A PROFIT, SOME THINGS ARE RUN AT A LOSS SO WE CAN RETAIN OUR HUMANITY.

Its a horrible idea. Liberalism at its finest. Trying to solve a problem while chasing your own tail. The homelessness has to deal with the character of the individuals (most of them) rather than money or no home. The mental landscape of the individual needs to change, the behavior needs to change. If it doesn't, no amount of shelter will help.

Taking into account of disability, no family etc. MOST homelessness is due to other things. Especially in Portland where most privileged pieces of shit decide they want to be homeless for the look of it, the trend of it. I lived there, I saw it first hand.

Oh man, this is a new level of stupid. Anybody who thinks they will be able to evict the "tenants" after 5 years or that the 200 sqft "home" will be livable after 5 years has smoke too much weed.
 Quoting: Resister

This. ^^^

If you let someone live on your property for free, you are basically ceding that property over to them. BAD IDEA.

Also, with all the rights and no responsibility of ownership or tenancy, I'll give you three guesses (and you only need one) what the property will look like after six months.

It's worth repeating: This is a new level of stupid.

Not ONE Portland libtard property owner is going to go for this. Not one. I can't think of a better way to prove that libtards are the hypocrites that they are.

Most of them are.

The sweet, loving family that is just down on their luck is the minority of the homeless.

Most are drunks, drug addicts and have mental illness.

Having said that. Women and children should receive first priority. Followed by Senior Citizens and Vets. Able bodied men helped last.

OMG. That quote you quoted is beyond stupid. The truth is that most homeless problems in big cities are CAUSED by idiotic liberal policies like rent control. Did you know that NYC has more abandoned apartments (due to rent control) than homeless people?

Good luck housing that in your backyard.
