Watch the series The First 48 and you'll see how murders are solved. Almost always is the person that left the scene. They go through the victim's phone to find who they were talking too. Serial killers only get caught when they get careless or by dumb luck on behalf of the coppers.

Get in touch with a lady named Dayle Hinman. Crime Profiler Extraordinaire of FDLE for 30 years. She helps solve the more difficult murder cases. She may be retired now, but maybe she can give you some good advice. She would be a great model character for your book. She has a show on the Justice Channel nightly at 6 pm EDT.

Story of writer who has stumbling blocks to overcome in writing blocks over a murder mystery.
The blocks eventually thaw revealing to oneself...I am that monster for real...
I just block out all recollection of the crime.
Throw in discovery of some black ops mind control Guinea pig thing.
Throw in several differing people who he suspects as have the same bad dream.
it was not one but many...You can go from there.
Bad PTB or machine...maybe an alien interference for a reason not yet known.

Make it beyond is the thing.

You're kinda close but I wasnt going to take it too far out there in terms of fringe / sci-fi but this is my theory..

I have a fascination with morbid and violent films. I mean I have seen some of the most twisted and screwed up movies that are out there and also I enjoy really gritty, intense and depressing films.

I am drawn to the darker, grimier side of human nature.

But what I think about is this;

All these 'villians' and 'monsters' (serial killers, rapists, murderers, psychopaths) in literature and the silver screen and all the depictions of brutality and madness that these authors and screen writers create are actually coming from their own dark, sick and wicked natures; that is to say the only way for a person to indulge in this dark wickedness without actually harming someone or jeapordizing their freedom or sanity is to act it all out on paper.

By creating a monster in word and ink you are transferring the monster within and capturing it in another dimension where it can no longer lay dormant inside waiting and lurking to rise up at any given moment. You are, in essence, preventing potential crimes and further devestation from spilling out into the collective.

Try the Gift Of Fear by Gavin BeBecker. Great insight into the human psych and bascally a handbook for figuring out serial killers, rapists, ect.

Also Vernon Gerbeck, Homicide Investigations book. Literally the Bible for death investigations to homicide investigators. Any real police detective, especially in larger departments would have this book as their reference and likely on the desk.
