Spreading it would make it even harder to deal with long term. You definitely wouldn't want that. Maybe,if you could somehow manage an implosion rather than an explosion, but then because it's right on the ocean, the sea would rush in to fill the void. If somehow you could prevent that, there's still ground water to deal with. From what I've read, the window to do anything about it was the first few hours and days. That train left already.
