Further stoking the sell-off was news that crude hit a new high of $54.76 a barrel, topping the prior record print of $54.45. And in economics news, initial jobless claims for the week ending Oct. 9 rose by a more than expected 15,000 to 352,000 after an upward revised print of 337,000 earlier. Informa Global Markets says that while the 4-week average remains some 12% below the 400,000 boom/bust line, it has turned up in the last few weeks, suggesting a more go-slow labor market as seen in recent surveys on business hiring plans.
