Why are Teachers paid so poorly?

Adults are just virtue signaling when they say they respect teachers.

They do NOT respect teachers at all, but they know they should. They think that their qualified to tell us how to do our "easy" jobs.

I had a parent teach one subject out of 7, one day. So basically he did 1/28th of the classes I had per week. This did not include grading, conferences, planning/scheduling, meetings, studying the yearly reinvention of education because gov't is involved and have to have a reason for existence. He paid the kids with candy and turned to me and said, "That's how it's done." What a pompous prick, but I got the message.

No, the public doesn't respect teachers, nor do they respect our training and degrees. In fact, they think they could do a better job.

For a masters degree, that SUCKS and proves that average adults think they are just as qualified to do the job. They think it's babysitting.

Most of my income is in benefits. I have been teaching for over 30 years and my income broken into an hourly wage is $16.00 per hour. After 30 years, a professional with a Masters degree is the equivalent education as a lawyer, chiropractic doctor, and more than an accountant.

So poleeese, stop with the teachers are respected bullshit. None of us believe you. Society has zero respect for teachers. If I could do it again, I would not go into teaching.

I'm usually the most educated person at my parent/teacher conferences, but they love to tell me how to do my job. Of course, most of them suck at their job which is parenting, and are in no way qualified to do my job, but that doesn't stop them.

"Those who can, do. Those who cannot, teach." We get it.

Not really. I'm married to a teacher and I can tell you that she works long hours... very long...

Truth, they end up taking their work home. At least they're not required to stay in the building during those hours

Imagine what our societies would be like if teachers were amoungst our highest earners.

This post proves my point about being more educated by far, and how podunks think they could do the job.

My work year is 11.5 months, dumb, dumb. My income broken into hourly wages isn't much more than a hotel receptionist with a High School diploma makes.

But why would I expect the uneducated masses to value education, that too would be dumb.

Keep patting yourselves on the back for really taking care of teachers so you can virtue signal to your under-educated friends about what a good person you are. I don't care anymore, just don't pretend in front of a teacher because we'll call out your lyin' BS in front of your friend, One-Tooth and your other friend, Moldy Hair.

I worked as administration (IT) within a private university years ago. The higher your degree the larger the salary. Period.

If they do it's by choice and not a requirement. What I expect from a teacher is to be an example to the student. A good work ethic and respect for family. Therefore, work a normal 8-4, 9-5 workday and don't take the job home with you.

When my first child was born I stopped working weekends or past 5 in the evening because that became family time. I don't believe in homework, especially when they get home at 3 PM and have extracurricular activities and then dinner and family time...homework teaches the wrong lesson.

Yeah cause teaching something you already know must be real hard....

It doesn't sound like you're being fair. Are you factoring in all the benefits, including pension? Are you factoring in continuing education time as hours you work when it is really personal development?

Were I work you don't get paid to take training. And you need 40 credits a year continuing education to maintain certifications. None of that is counted as paid time, its on your dime.

I also don't get a pension. I pay into 401k and Social Security or I don't get retirement income period.

If I factored in my continuing education and what I pay for retirement I could show how I'm way under paid too.

Keep in mind that just because a school day ends, a teachers work doesn't. They spend a lot of time reading, and grading papers. Preparing lesson plans, etc, it all adds up.

because teaching with common core is all airy fairy.. anyone can do it.

I live in middle of nowhere podunk town in Illinois. Teachers make 70k-100k+ They are overpaid here.

It is all relative depending on where in the country the teach is located.

Teaching is way overdue for an overhaul. Online learning and homeschooling is going to really cut into the future of education. Our current system is based on methods handed down from the 1800's.

I would rather see our tax dollars(need to be much lower) go toward more basics and then trades. Not everyone needs a higher education like college and this country(USA) has completely devalued the college degree except in higher end skills like Doctors, Engineers and Scientists.

Teachers here in bumble fuck Idaho make bank,the music teacher is pulling 80k,they all have medical,cost of living increases and retirement,on top of that they only work part of the year and have lots of holidays.

Because most teachers are as dumb as rocks and we all know it. We sat through their classes as children and when we get to college, we raise our eyebrows in awe as the "type" from our own generation self- sorts themselves into "education" colleges. We know the truth.

Why should they be paid more? Some can't even tell the difference between a clock and a bomb!

the problem is taxpayers wages and benefits pale in comparison.My property taxes that teachers derive their income are going through the roof.

Cause we're so nice? Don't count on it. Not after you've decided that minimum wage is adequate for a masters level education, and constantly criticize the job we're doing.

You get what you pay for. You pay a little over minimum wage, and we'll give you a little over minimum wage education. I don't care about you and yours anymore than you care about me and mine.

In Illinois they make a killing, especially in Chiraq. Even when they make $90K plus they are still out there protesting and threatening to go on strike until they are paid the same as doctors. All they teach is leftwing bullshit and brainwash the kids of America.
