Initially, the Department of Justice claimed the arrest was not related to national security issues. However, in an interview with Russian state media, Levashov’s wife, Mary, said her husband told her the warrant he read talked about “the fact that the virus my husband allegedly created was related to Trump’s victory in the elections.”

Does she mean the virus that the rogue agents in the CIA created that is designed to look like it was created by Russia ?

And that by "related to Trump's victory" they mean "Failed to get Hillary elected" ?

Levashov was remanded in custody according to Spanish legal sources.

He was detained at Barcelona airport on Friday while Spanish judges consider the extradition case against him.

A source told AFP that Levashov is 'suspected of having participated in hacking the election campaign in the United States'.

It is understood US authorities have 40 days to present their extradition case to the Spanish national court.

Kremlin says arrested Russian hacker has admitted to hacking election in Donald Trump’s favor

What made Pyotr Levashov’s arrest notable is that Kremlin-funded TV propaganda news outlet Russia Today quickly reported that he was accused of having rigged the U.S. presidential election.

This claim was not reported anywhere else, and still has not been. But now Russia Today is taking its claims even further, asserting that Levashov has confessed to his wife that he rigged the election in Donald Trump‘s favor.

Here's what the CIA aka Washington Post has to say:

Pyotr Levashov, 36, was arrested Friday in Barcelona following a joint FBI-Spanish operation also aimed at bringing down his Kelihos botnet, Spanish authorities said in a statement, describing one of the better known networks of compromised computers.

Levashov is accused by a leading spam watchdog and other cybercrime watchers of being Peter Severa, who has been mentioned in relation to the Kelihos botnet. The arrest drew attention after his wife told Russia’s RT broadcaster that he told her he was being linked to America’s 2016 election hacking.

If Levashov was indeed one of the hackers the Kremlin used, and he’s been caught, it may be fingering him in an attempt to divert attention from any of his co-conspirators who may still be at large.

Alleged Spam King Pyotr Levashov Arrested

Levashov is currently listed as #7 in the the world’s Top 10 Worst Spammers list maintained by anti-spam group Spamhaus. The U.S. Justice Department maintains that Severa was the Russian partner of Alan Ralsky, a convicted American spammer who specialized in “pump-and-dump” spam schemes designed to artificially inflate the value of penny stocks.

Levashov allegedly went by the aliases Peter Severa and Peter of the North (Pyotr is the Russian form of Peter). My reporting indicates that — in addition to spamming activities — Severa was responsible for running multiple criminal operations that paid virus writers and spammers to install “fake antivirus” software. So-called “fake AV” uses malware and/or programming tricks to bombard the victim with misleading alerts about security threats, hijacking the PC until its owner either pays for a license to the bogus security software or figures out how to remove the invasive program.

Researchers Clobber Khelios Spam Botnet

That’s precisely the approach that security researchers used to seize control of Khelios. The caper was pulled off by a motley band of security experts from the Honeynet Project, Kaspersky, SecureWorks, and startup security firm CrowdStrike. The group figured out how to crack the encryption used to control systems infected with Khelios, and then sent a handful of machines new instructions to connect to a Web server that the researchers controlled.

Re: Russian hacker arrested in Spain told wife warrant was “linked to Trump’s election win”
Trump’s Russia Scandal Returns As Hacker Says He Was Arrested for Virus Linked to Trump’s Win

Sheera Frenkel in Buzzfeed pointed out that normally the arrest of a spammer wouldn’t make international headlines, but that he had reportedly been recruited by Russia’s national security service, “In 2012, Russian investigative journalists Andrei Soldatov and Irina Borogan, reported that Russian hacker forums believed that Peter Severa (believed to be Levashov’s online alias) had been recruited by the Russia’s national security service, the FSB. The researchers wrote that Peter Severa had been attempting to recruit hackers on online forums.”

There’s a link here to a virus that spread fake news spam about Putin’s opponent in the 2012 Russian election, “The alias of Peter Severa was also named by a 2012 court filing by Microsoft, which outlined how the extensive spam network had been used to spread a host of computer viruses. One of those, the Kelihos virus, was used to spread spam during the 2012 Russian elections that pushed fake news stories about the candidate running against Russian President Vladimir Putin. Those emails included unsubstantiated allegations that Putin’s opponent, Mikhail D. Prokhorov, had come out as gay.”
