We have plenty of forces in theater. The problem is NKs artillery. They have upwards of ten thousand very heavy guns and MLRS, all pointed at Seoul and the US military base there. Estimates have been done, one by Brookings that said NK could drop half a million heavy shells on Seoul and the American bases in less than 30 minutes. Nothing would survive that, Seoul would be almost completely destroyed, American base gone, and this is all without NK using nukes, ballistic missles or any of the nerve gas they have stockpiled. It would be the most devastating artillery barrage in known history, and they will unleash it the moment somebody is foolish enough to give them the slightest provocation. |

North won’t have air superiority over the DMZ. They still have not adopted their tactics for smart munitions on the field either. We have GPS guided artillery rounds now even, they eat soft targets. The initial damage from the first strike becomes the biggest problem, but if they throw everything at Soul like some think and not troop positions, it ends that much quicker. Chemical weapons might be our biggest problem if the war reignites, we are still at war after all, it never ended. Don’t forget a single wing of F-15’s (in theory) can kill 1000 targets in a single pass. So they tell us anyway and it is old news now, they have had time to perfect it. NK only has 10k artillery pieces. [link to www.wired.com (secure)] I'm only human, it's my biggest flaw. We must all realize a sink a chair and a pillow are all luxuries of home and a soldiers helmet takes the place of all three. |

I imagine that the new counter fire radar systems could diminish the North's bite a little, but doubtfully enough to save Seoul. Seems to me that to totally eliminate their artillery you'd have to push ground troops in. After heavy losses and after Seoul is flattened their artillery would finally be silenced. Berlin withstood a lot of bombs, but once artillery got into range there wasn't a building left intact. Seoul wouldn't fare better. |
