Cheney plane fine after minor problem
Reuters
Saturday, February 24, 2007; 11:54 PM
WASHINGTON/SYDNEY (Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney's plane had a small mechanical problem on Sunday but there were no safety concerns and it would make a planned refueling stop in Singapore, the White House said.
White House spokeswoman Emily Lawrimore said there was a problem with a generator on the plane, which left Sydney's international airport about 9 a.m. on Sunday (5 p.m. EST (2200 GMT) Saturday), but it posed no safety issues and the aircraft was fine.

A flight from Sydney to Singapore takes about seven hours.
Cheney had been visiting Australia as part of a trip to thank Washington's Iraq war allies Japan and Australia.
He was returning to the United States on Sunday. The refueling stop in Singapore was already scheduled, the White House said.
"Nobody is scheduled to get off the plane. Nobody is scheduled to get on the plane," a source in Singapore, who declined to be identified, told Reuters.
Australian Prime Minister John Howard earlier told reporters in Sydney: "I am not aware of the full circumstances and I have not been told except that it has been diverted."
A Reuters photographer at Sydney airport said Air Force 2 had proceeded toward the runway as normal and revved its engines before the engines appeared to decelerate.
A mobile stairway was sent out to the plane but a door in the plane opened and an unidentified figure appeared in the hatchway and waved the stairway off, the Reuters photographer said.
The door was then closed and the plane proceeded to the runway and took off.
Cheney arrived in Sydney late on Thursday. Anti-war protesters who accuse him of being one of the main architects of the unpopular Iraq war scuffled briefly with police on Thursday and Friday.
A total of 11 people were arrested but his visit was otherwise uneventful.
Cheney's health has also been a concern in the past, with the vice president having a history of heart trouble.

Fox news said Chaney's plane landed in Singapore for scheduled re-fueling, and is being checked out for a minor electrical problem.
Too bad, I was hoping the plane had gone down. |

No, it hasn't
There is a LOT of explanations required as to why he went to Singapore instead of returning to Sydney which was far closer. |

I watched the 11 pm network news tonight on NBC, ABC, FOX , CBS. Not because of this, I was checking the weather.
Now, these are all stations out of Washington DC.
The Cheney story broke before 11 pm.
Not ONE word on this.
Had this been mentioned, I'd have caught it.
Had the plane been diverted they should have mentioned it.
Had the plane NOT been diverted they should have mentioned it.
Had the story been total BS they should have mentioned it, because at 10:35 pm, MSNBC was emailing the story - I have it right here..
MSNBC Breaking News: Plane carrying Vice President Cheney diverted for unspecified reason
Sent at 10:35 pm - half hour before the news.
But most of the stations ran footage of the ice storm that came through here 2 weeks ago, interviewed people at stores shopping for the approaching storm - one fucking reporter had some old guy pull crap he bought out of bags in the parking lot, so they could discuss THAT. I am not kidding you.
Washington DC... VP of the US is in a questionable situation and we're looking at bread and cereal for God's sake...
dammit, now I've pissed myself off.

Not seeing it on Sky news online. Strange.
And, did you all read in the tornado thread that the NOAA is telling, in its weather warnings for those in the southeast U.S., to keep ID on them at all times. WTF?
So that they can identify the dead quicker? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 199671
(just to clear up why NOAA /local news media advised this):
Shortly after posting the statement re: 'Keep ID on you at all times" we heard it AGAIN on another local news channel. However, this time they *explained* why (I was the one that posted it because I thought it was such a morbid thing to say). Anyway, the reason they 'gave' was that if the area around your house gets damaged (even if your house is not) then the police will shut that area down and you will need ID to get back to your house (if you are away when the damage occurs). At least, that is the reason they gave. I will accept any rules that you feel necessary to your freedom. I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do. ~ Robert Heinlein |

Is photo ID mandatory in the US?

No, although I know of at least two incidents where authorities would have one believe otherwise.
(However, in an area that has been damaged, when the police come in and shut it off like that, perhaps there are loopholes that allow that. I don't know.)
The optimistic part of me imagines that they do this to keep looters out. I will accept any rules that you feel necessary to your freedom. I am free, no matter what rules surround me. They need to explain why he didn't return to Sydney and instead went to Singapore unannounced. Refuelling and engine problems are both innappropriate reasons given that Singapore is 4000 miles away.
First it was claimed that it was a scheduled refuelling stop - rubbish since they are flying 6 hours backwards to "refuel".
Then it was claimed there were engine/electrical difficulties - In that event, the plane would have returned to Sydney or even Brisbane immediately, not flown for another 6 hours to Singapore |

The catch22 of that is you have to leave your house to get the picture ID.
Since you aren't allowed to leave you can never apply for the ID. |

Let me add, the reason I say this is because I was in DC going into an art exibit at one of the museums and for some reason, they had a guard checking IDs. He wasn't going to let me in. He told me in DC and Va you must carry iD with you at ALL times. Later I asked a cop in Va., he said the same.
