It's always quiet where I live, so I wouldn't notice much difference...til I go to get my coffee and pick up my lhone...I moved my kids and i way out to the boonies, just so they'd have a chance to survive whats coming. We have 55 acres, woods, a creek, deer, wild game, and a mountain with caves. I lived in a big city before this. God bless and good luck in the inevitable mess to come.

This is one of my biggest questions. Most other situations I would say get out of the city, pack your preps and be a first mover. What if your transportation is useless? Someone said barbed wire at home etc. so would it be better to take what you can on bikes/foot and head for the most rural nearby area? Or fortify home, work with neighbors to make staying in place the best option?

Re: Wake up after an EMP attack....What do you do first?
I probably wouldn't notice for at least an hour.

I wake up, without an alarm, before dawn every day. I move through the house with the lights off, so everyone else stays asleep. The dogs follow me like shadows and we head outside, me to check out the fading stars and to make sure the dogs don't decide to play with a skunk or a pack of raccoons, and them to do their thing. When we all get back inside, I light the gas stove and throw on a kettle for tea, to enjoy out on the porch, whatever the weather. I enjoy the velvet feel of night slipping into day. There is a moment every morning when you hear and sense the community around you wake up, almost as a group. And it seems like the seconds leading up to that belong to just you, because you are the only crazy-assed human up and out at that time, watching the world roll over on its belly.

Yeah, I wouldn't start to get suspicious until the sky started to turn grey and an alarm did not go off inside, waking someone up.

No biggie, though...

Three weeks without power after Sandy in freezing temps, plus a nor'easter, was a good dry run for an EMP. Half my neighborhood was washed away and we did fine.

If you don't have a wood stove, get one. They are key to survival. Seriously. Or build an indoor rocket stove.

Kerosine lanterns are also very efficient fuel-wise, although camping lanterns throw a lot more light. Not sure if the latter would be affected. Candles are worthless in terms of casting usable light...you'd have to have more candles than the Vatican to properly light a room.

Do toilets work when the grid is down?
 Quoting: Evolution16

Yes, but the water pumps that pump the water to your house, and then into your house pipes will be gone.

So no, not unless you have water to manually flush them.

The sewers will back up too, as the big pumps that keep the sewage moving will be gone.

Bad news.
Be honest and kindhearted, patient and uncomplaining, thus will you be more unmoved by the drama of events.

Yup, but there would be a lot of competition for such food. Plus, when there is not enough food some people would resort to cannibalism.

Most Emp authorities suggest small electronics not connected to a wire grid will probably be too small to accumulate enough induced charge to be damaged but thick copper sheilding is what the pros use for maximum protection of whats inside

Re: Wake up after an EMP attack....What do you do first?
First thing I would do is check my phone. (Might have forgot to charge it?)

Then I would go check to see if my car would work.

Then I know the SHTF. I would immediately get all the water and canned foods from the local grocery store (by this time everyone is confused and there is enough food and water hopefully to avoid riots at the stores)

Then I would start gathering up wood, barracading the windows. Waiting for family to arrive (already notified them to walk to my house in case this happened)

Setting up a little nice area to relax and wait for it to blow over. There is a nice field I can fence off and use for farming near me. Eventually work our way towards the country once we know its somewhat safe. Then start anew in the country with farm animals and a big farm and just survive as long as we can.

The most important thing EVER is water and food. Mostly water.
You can survive weeks without food but you cant survive a week without water.

That is why I have started gathering water from our faucets, when I finish a gallon of milk, 2 liter soda, a gallon tea, and type of liquor bottle, whatever container I can seal up, I fill it up with our city water and store it. I would never drink my city water right now because it is not very safe (they have warnings about it on the friggin water bill!) But when SHTF, you can bet your ass I will drink it. You should be able to boil the water too and kill those bad bacteria.

I will be ready. I am anticipating it.

Start figuring out what worked. Decide on bugging in or out. See, in an EMP, it doesn't all go "poof". As a matter of fact, and I know this 100% certainy, about 50% of the cars made prior to 1998 would still be working. Those made in 60s and 70s would be functional as well. Tractors. Some diesel semis. Not all genies. It wouldn't be as bad as the boogeyman would have you thing.

Not my kids! My kids, aged 10, 16, 18, and 23, all know survival skills. They can hunt, shoot, set traps, identify plants and herbs for food and medicine , and even sew when necessary! My kids are homeschooled, and just amazing. I knew they would need these skills to survive one day, and my grandfather was full blooded Cherokee, so we are basically learning the stuff our ancestors did.

Cars dying: Some say that all vehicles traveling will come to a halt, with all modern vehicles damaged because of their use of modern electronics (and one movie even had a bulk, non-electronic part dying). Most likely there will be some vehicles affected, but probably just a small fraction of them (although this could create traffic jams in large cities). A car does not have very long cabling to act as antennas, and there is some protection from metallic construction. As non-metallic materials are used more and more in the future to decrease weight and increase fuel efficiency, this advantage may disappear.

^^This

Whether municipal water or a well, you have an electrical pump that pumps the water.

No electricity, no water.

My suggestion is to put in a well if you don't already have one. People do this all the time for landscaping. I have one set up with a handpump for times that I may not have electricity. I went two weeks with no electric after a hurricane, and I swore never again would I be stuck without water on the premesis.

It cost me $700. It only has 1/2 inch piping, but was cheaper than a regular well. You can pay more for a regular well as well.

If you already have a well, but can't afford to put in an additional well for an emergency, then you can make sure that you have the hand pump, everything you need to cut the electrical pump off and install the handpump, and several gallons of water to prime it if you need to once you've installed it.

I keep five 5 gallon jugs of water in the pumphouse as well.

I have these wells on all my properties.

Let's just hope that if we ever lose electric like that, that it does happen at night when most people are home. If it happened during the day, a LOT of people are going to be a good ways from their homes, and separated from their families, with no way to contact each other.

My family has a plan and meeting places for different scenarios. Everyone should.

It would honestly take quite awhile before figuring out anything was seriously wrong - days even. We're used to the power and everything going down and landslides closing the only road. But then, once I discovered it was an emp and shit is not coming back, then it's party time!
