washboard !??!! no way.
go to the dollar store and get a plunger
get a 5 gallon bucket/lid
cut a hole in the centre of the lid to accommodate the handle of the plunger
put some water enough to cover the clothes
tiny bit soap
stick the plunger in
put the lid on with the handle outside in the hole
HAVE FUN and get a BETTER WASH than these modern time POS washers give.
the action of the plunger WORKS that soap/detergent in and out of the items.
IT WORKS FINE AND SPARES THE CLOTHES.

Millenials, such as the OP of the following thread, will be completely useless, not able to utilize the only thing they know, i.e. their glorious tech skills:

Not my kids! My kids, aged 10, 16, 18, and 23, all know survival skills. They can hunt, shoot, set traps, identify plants and herbs for food and medicine , and even sew when necessary! My kids are homeschooled, and just amazing. I knew they would need these skills to survive one day, and my grandfather was full blooded Cherokee, so we are basically learning the stuff our ancestors did.

I do think the GLP crowd would be the most likely to sense this is serious and get their mindset retired the fastest. The Alabama pipeline burst I was filling up gas cans thinking there would be a shortage and most thought I was being ridiculous. As it turns out they think they were right - I still wouldn't change being over prepared.

The no electricity nothing works scenario is the hardest for me to get a grip on what to do

No alarms went off, nothing beeped because everything is fried. It's spring so the temperature change didn't wake you. Just silence. No electricity no cars working, no noise at all. Freaky thought! What would you do first? Ride bike to grocery store? See if neighbors are up?

I don't know but I think the natural early risers would an hour or two head start before chaos.....

Put the fires out.

One thing that NOBODY ever mentions with an EMP is the fact that many of the electronics burst into flame when they get zapped!

PUT THE FIRES OUT FIRST.

Holy mother of God!

If that happens it would be a fire storm because there will be no fire trucks to contain it.

EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE would burn!

It would only take one or two structures per block to get a firestorm going & then the entire neighborhood goes up in flames.

I guess in that case the only thing you could do is run to find an open field or bridge or hill top where you can breathe.

EMP is a myth. If a legitimate one happened, and the government wanted the lights back on, an automatic relay would restore power in 3 seconds. Therefore, I'd start the Mister Coffee and enjoy the usual morning brew.

No, it would not. The range of an EMP is no more than 30 miles for the largest nuke.

If this is not the case, PLEASE CITE THE GRID OUTAGE THAT HAPPENED AFTER STARFISH PRIME.

Oh, America, France, Russia and others have conducted numerous nuclear tests. Hundreds in Nevada alone. Please cite the repairs needed. How about all that damage caused by Kim Jong doing tests IN MODERN TIMES? None that I heard of! Kim Jong's airport is still working!

The grid is the grid, nothing changed with it between then and now. Please put your thinking cap on, The Day After was B.S.

Stop the EMP hoaxing, if it happens it is because someone false flag flipped a switch.

Do toilets work when the grid is down?
 Quoting: Evolution16

Yea, your toilet will flush for a while.....but if you have a septic tank it will work forever as long as you have water to flush it.

But if you're on city sewer.......oh boy......big problem there......I've read that raw sewage will eventually come up through the main sewer pipe in your house, unless you cut and cap it.

They may look like they work for a little while, but the water valves to homes are ELECTRIC so it runs out quickly. The bad news is that people will still use the toilet and it will cause sewage to back up into people's homes. I would pull the toilets and buy OTIS drain plugs for all drains, sinks, toilet flanges, etc. and plug those holes or you, like many people, will be homeless much sooner than anyone thinks because their home smells like massive amounts of rotting, festering feces.

This is a major risk to having any reasonable roof over your head so I would prepare for this one.

It was a joke but now I'm curious...is eating organic and wearing dry cleaned clothes not done? Most men who wear suits get them dry cleaned - are they wasting money and time if they eat organic? Never really thought about dry cleaning like that, other than in my 20s once I tried to save money by washing a suit with the intention of ironing it myself and saving money on my dry cleaning bill. I have never trie that again.

This is one of my biggest questions. Most other situations I would say get out of the city, pack your preps and be a first mover. What if your transportation is useless? Someone said barbed wire at home etc. so would it be better to take what you can on bikes/foot and head for the most rural nearby area? Or fortify home, work with neighbors to make staying in place the best option?
