Re: WHY AMERICANS DON'T BOTHER LEARNING EUROPEAN GEOGRAPHY EXPLAINED IN ONE IMAGE
I read a funny story once about a couple of Brits who arrived in New York with a plan to tour the United States.

They were going to drive down the coast to visit Miami and the Florida Keys, then drive over to Texas, then up the Mississippi to Chicago, then route 66 to California, and up the coast to Seattle, then back across the mountains and the northern states to New York for departure.

The American they recounted their plans to asked how long they were staying, and they said "a few days".

I wouldn't laugh at them for being stupid, although they forgot to check the mileage.

I took a short tour of Europe and I was astonished at how quickly I found myself in another country, which spoke a completely different language, and in another capital.

It really was a shocking blow to my imagination. It was so damned small. I was just as stupid as the Brits. I had never really bothered to look at a map and count the miles and compare them to the miles between places in America.

Europeans sometimes complain about the wastefulness of Americans, who consume too much fuel. But they fail to realize that we have to cover much greater distances than most of them can imagine.

It can be shocking to see it.

My sister married a man from Panama. When she first brought him to America, they flew to Florida, and drove to Chicago. The drive only covered a small portion of the entire continent, but all the way, her husband was stunned by what he saw. He kept shaking his head and saying "my poor little country".

He had seen movies, depicting American cities, and he too could have looked at a map and counted the miles, but nothing compares with the experience.

In addition to the experience, there is something called the economy of scale.

The scale of America demands a big economy.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72466122

We have common enemies, that's true, but the problem is we just don't have common interests any longer to justify our being allies or to justify American taxpayers paying to protect Europe.

As Europeans and the British are fond of telling us "Americans protect us from WHAT?" I agree.

There are LOTS of 40-100 year old houses in the town that I live in. I live in what is called "tornado alley" and so far, so good. Only one F2 reported here in 1960 or 1961- damaging one or two houses. My grandparent's live in the country in a 60 year old house. They have straight line winds that reach 70 mph sometimes and no damage to their house. The US has about every kind of climate you can imagine.

world geography is important.
it is more than countries, states,
cities, . .
it is history, the course of humanity's
developement, . .the things, the stories
the people who lived , ..
ignorance is nothing to be proud of.
that is just being stupid.

And we have proper infrastructure coast to coast to which amazes most immigrants. They keep waiting for it to stop but even in the most remote town they can find there's paved roads, water, electric, internet and sound buildings.

That and we drive 80 without wrecking and our citizens actually obey traffic laws.

I met a guy from India amazed by our city traffic. He would sit at his window and just watch it. He couldn't believe ppl stayed in their lanes and obeyed rules and traffic lights.

We have enough geography of our own to worry about.

:usa/euro:

That's not even including our biggest state, Alaska, which is more than twice as large as Texas and Texas is the size of France.

So, I'll take a geography test over Europe and take shit for not doing well on it as soon as you ace one on American geography.

Deal?

Here's our States and population centers if you need a study guide.

Also if you're wondering if this thread is just another American excuse to be a douche and show off, the answers is yes, yes it is.
