You clowns have never called your local HVAC techs yet. They don't have R22 anymore.

Maybe you can get some illegal Mexican to fix your old junk.

R22 and R12 have been on the way out for years. R134a is the current refrigerant these days.

R410a has been the standard for new AC units for over 10 years now, but introduced in the market about 15 years ago.

10 years is about a normal lifespan for an AC, 3-5 years if you life near salt water, 4-7 years if you have sulfur water, normal conditions 15 is considered lucky, 18-20 years is rare and unusual (AC techs will take a picture to show friends).

Ac copper coils develop pin hole leaks (from household sulfur water, gas released in steam sucked in return air) and cracked solder joins that leak Freon.

By 2020, the last group of R22 units that were sold should be about 13 to 18 years old. Doubt they survive lightning strikes , leaky coils , fried defrost boards that are unavailable, bad reversing valves, bad compressors and crumbling aluminum cooling fins.

The old R22 units were mostly 10 SEER rated. An affordabe R410a unit will be 14 SEER and get higher if willing to spend$$$. This is about equivalent to a car getting 15 mpg at 10 SEER to a newer car getting 27 mpg with a 14 SEER.

FYI....Regarding the OZONE layer, ozone is O3 which absorbs the UV energy from Sun and in that process breaks off a single oxygen molecule to become O2 , which is what we breathe. Lightning strikes and Sprites repair the ozone by reattaching a loose oxygen molecule back to an O2. A single lightning strike repairs something like millions of metric tons of ozone.

When you use a kitchen blender or cake mixer or a plug in power tool and you smell that metallic vanilla smell, that is ozone.

Still using R-22 and no plans to change it until this machine is broken as fuck in another 25 years.
 Quoting: Evil_Twin

Same here, with family breathing issues we can't go without a great filter in our Ac unit.
It's old r-22 but no way we can afford an upgrade to this unit until it literally rusts into dust.

Luckily the first time we heard about r-22 beging phased out some years back we had a pal that has an AC license so he could buy it for us, we have 6 of those huge containers stashed for the future.
I may need to buy a few more now.

Freon is heavy. R12 doesn't just "float" all the way up. Just like every other phasing out DUPont just needs new revenue.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 40895740

Exactly! Refrigerant gasses are heavier than air, so unless some scientist or chemist can explain the process by which a gas that does not get off the ground, makes it up to the ozone layer to do its damage - I'd say that this is BS. The poster above is correct - all this started when Dupont's patent on R22 finished!

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74760944

I wrote the above info and voted for Trump. The phase out appears as a red flag for freedom minded folks who are concerned for international unelected governing bureaucratic bodies (I.U.G.B.B) reaching into their backyards and telling them what they can do with their own personal properties. It opens the doors for other IUGBB to do the same, condemn older cars , gun control, birth control, energy police, health police etc... I understand their resistance to allow the camel's nose in the tent.

However, I must say the way they have done the phase out is in line with the life cycle of most ac units and very few people will be affected. Could have been worse.

FYI .....When you get your refrigeration license, the whole course and exam is all about Global Warming and government fines, penalties, regulations. Nothing about equipment repair and things needed to send a tech out in the field. The global warming indoctrination is really heavy and so is the indoctrination to submitting to IUGBB's. The poor guy is just a blue collar technician wanting to fix a broken AC unit and has to fill his head with this stuff.

I know the fucked up rules killed the Columbia shuttle crew. They were doomed by the outlawing of Freon to make the insulation foam for the external tank. Had to go to a substitute foam expander and the results were weak as shit. Research it if you don't believe it

Peeps, I hate to tell you. But, it's already too late. THEY pulled all of the freon back in the early 1980's and it hasn't changed much of anything to do with the ozone holes.
GLOBAL WARMING DAMAGE IS ALREADY DONE.

We're all just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

And yes, I am still waiting to hear about the theory of climate stasis.

You can still buy r-22 on ebay or Amazon. The sellers might ask you to send them a photo copy of your license.

That's how we bought our stockpile, a friend let me photocopy his license.

Have to say I agree with you. I'm EPA HVAC certified, air conditioner service is just one notch in my tech belt. These newer refrigerants operate under higher pressures than the earlier versions, meaning there's more stress on the system resulting in a shorter life expectancy.
With the proper licenses R-12 and R-22 will still be available at a price for at least 15/20 years. Honestly, the R-12 units blow the coldest, and last longer when properly maintained. Not cleaning the condenser and evaporator coils is the most common cause of system overload/ failure next to refrigerant leakage.

The EPA is strict on refrigerants for more than just ozone reason.

Organofluorines (like Freon) bioaccumulate in the human body and have been linked to serious long term consequences.

The antibiotic Cipro (and other organoflourine antibiotics), and had to be given Black Box warning by the FDA due to it causing severe muscle damage.

There's a very compelling theory that Fibromyalgia is actually just organoflourine poisoning, but its being covered up by the government/medical establishment/etc. due to their own culpability.
