I live pretty close to Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, NM. Yesterday I witnessed a bizarre looking aircraft taking off.

I just researched it, and it seems to be a Airborne Early Warning and Control system - [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

It looked exactly like an Boeing E-3 Sentry, commonly known as AWACS - [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

Military people: Is it normal for these things to be flying around during "peacetime"? Might it be a harbinger of doom?

-E-3 Sentry aircraft were among the first to deploy during Operation Desert Shield

-NATO E-3s joined their USAF colleagues for joint air defense as part of Operation Eagle Assist in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon

-NATO and RAF E-3s participated in the international military operation in Libya

-On 27 January 2015, the RAF deployed an E-3D Sentry to Cyprus in support of U.S.-led coalition airstrikes against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria

-On 18 November 2015, an E-3G was deployed to the Middle East to begin "immediately" flying combat missions in support of Operation Inherent Resolve against ISIL

While I was looking at it I stopped and stared at it for a few minutes thinking to myself how strange it looked compared to the planes we normally see around here. It was surprising

Interesting? Have you ever seen one in the air prior?

I've never seen one take off from Kirtland. I'm wondering if it stopped here to re-fuel on a continuation Westward.

Only one other time I've seen it and it was many years ago. Don't remember the exact date. Pretty sure it was during war times... But then again we are always at war in some form

In a war or a battle, what is an AWACS plane actually used for?

It's used for surveillance and command & control. Depending primarily on radar the aircraft is keeping track of all things flying within its surveillance range, identifying them as friendly, unfriendly, and neutral, then passing that information to people who might need to know about it.

Newer forms of radar can also keep track of ground targets. This information, too, is passed along to those who need it.

The E-3 is also used to guide bombers to their targets. In Operation Desert Storm, the AWACS planes formed an interlocking, yet noninterfering, network of command posts able to manage the hundreds of warplanes that might be conducting attack sorties and combat air patrols at any given moment.

I saw one flying above Las Vegas the other day. Didn't think anything of it really, since Nellis AFB is always flying jets and I have seen AWACS flying around before. But, so many in so many locations might be telling.

I see them here occasionally at NAS JAX. In fact, I saw one either yesterday or the day before.

Re: Guys, I saw an 'Airborne Early Warning and Control' airplane take off from Kirtland AFB yesterday -- Doomy?
I saw something yesterday I've never seen in over 50 years of living in Phoenix, Az. (near Luke AFB).

Two groups of jets doing crazy stuff.

One group had two regular colored jets, plus one red one.

The other group had two regular colored jets, plus one yellow one.

I was in rush hour traffic on the highway, and answering a phone call at the same time. I couldn't make out what kind of jets they were, but the smoke trails reminded me of the dog fights in the movie 'Top Gun'.

But they weren't dog fighting. The two groups were flying in the same direction.

By the time I hung up the phone they were out of sight.

Strange.. hmm
