And all the US would have to do, really, is arm them with neutron-type nuclear weapons in the 5kT to 10kT range, and it's bye-bye NK artillery bunkers and hardened air defence/radar sites. The radiation from neutron weapons is very intense but also very short-lived, so there'd be no fallout to worry about.

The cruise missiles would also be very hard to detect and even harder to counter because they fly so close to the ground.

You're right, the North Koreans could get quite a few rounds downrange before the US and South Korean air forces could respond. However, the damage and loss of life won't be quite as great as some imagine.

Plus, US and SK artillery assets emplaced near the DMZ have fire detection systems that will allow them to respond almost instantaneously with a counter-strike, and in less time than it will take the first incoming rounds to arrive.

It's estimated that at least 25% of North Korea's artillery pieces, due to age, may malfunction on the first day of a war. Ammunition failures will be equally prevalent. Gun crew fatigue and incapacity will whittle down the numbers of functional artillery batteries still further.

Their longest-ranging guns and rocket artillery can only hit the outskirts of the greater Seoul metropolitan area, not Seoul proper. There is an extensive network of shelters in the Seoul metropolitan area, meaning that a lot of people will be able to get below ground quickly once the first rounds start landing. Yes, some will still die.

The only chance the North Koreans have of doing really significant damage is if they use the element of surprise and launch an artillery strike that is unexpected.
