Lake Ontario Flooding Worsens Due To "Plan 2014"

The International Joint Commission and its Plan 2014 have been taking a lot of heat lately for the extremely high water levels on Lake Ontario.

Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River are running about 21 inches higher than average. Shoreline property owners, businesses along the lake and government officials are all fired up and worried about widespread flooding.

Two Upstate congressmen - Rep. John Katko, R-Camillus, and Rep. Chris Collins, R-Clarence - are calling for President Donald Trump to intervene and scrap Plan 2014, which was put in place earlier this year following 16 years of debate and $20 million dollars for research studies.

The National Weather Service has issued a Lakeshore Flood Warning from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday for Monroe, Niagara and Orleans counties.

This is an upgrade from the flood watch previously in effect.

The warning has been issued due to the combination of high lake levels and moderate to strong northeast winds, according to the National Weather Service.

Sunday, a wave surge from Lake Ontario pushed the Niagara River over its banks on the Youngstown waterfront, and water extended 15 feet past the doorways in the passenger waiting room at Niagara Jet Adventures, a jet boat ride attraction.

Owner Brian Price and Capt. Lloyd Schrack were stacking sandbags Monday outside the building, bracing for what the National Weather Service said would be an afternoon of thunderstorms and high winds, likely to create more flooding.

Thank you for posting. I'm in Ontario and we have been seeing some flooding around the shoreline as well. Torontos "beaches" areas are seeing shoreline washouts. Water levels are at a record high and if the rain keeps up...

While visiting flooded shoreline areas of Western New York on Memorial Day, Gov. Andrew Cuomo noted the joint U.S./Canadian panel that controls the water levels of Lake Ontario "blew it" and had committed a "series of blunders" that worsened the situation.

Cuomo on Monday called for the International Joint Committee to increased water releases from the Moses-Saunders dam in Massena to lower the lake, despite that doing so would increase flooding downstream on the St. Lawrence River around Montreal

The solution is simple.

Do not develop on waterfront properties that are prone to flooding.
