There are 2 pipelines ( Quatar and Iran) that need to go through Syria to get to Europe. If these 2 pipelines were allowed to get to the EU via Syria, it would hurt the Russian economy as their pipelines would be in less demand in the EU. PRESIDENT ASSAD has made a deal with the Russians to not let the 2 pipelines go through Syria thus protecting Russian interests. So now the US has to invade to "kill the terrorists and spread democracy". If Hilary was in power, we would probably have nuked Damascus.

Well, first of all... Iran has no capability to stop us from flying wherever the fuck we want.

As for Turkey, being a NATO member I highly doubt they would fire on a US plane outside their own borders. Should they try, their export version anti-aircraft missile systems may stop conventional fighter or attack aircraft from entering syrian airspace but it won't stop the F-22 or B2, and AA missile systems can't reach into all of Syrian airspace. Their fighter jets would stand ZERO chance.

So then it comes down to Russia. Do they really want to cross that line? Their S400 may very well be able to lock onto our stealth aircraft, even if not reliably. Their fighter jets may or may not be able to pick them up on radar, but there are other ways to detect and intercept stealth aircraft such as satellite infrared detection. Once you have a vector they could engage visibly, of course that would only work against the B2 since the F22 has plenty of defenses.

A successful attack on one of our aircraft, let's say by a S400, would surely lead to a response. Cruise missiles are no match for the S400, but there's only a limited number of launchers stationed in Syria... if I remember correctly maybe 20 or so. The US has the capability of firing hundreds of cruise missiles simultaneously which could easily overwhelm the system, it would simply run out of interceptors and eventually be destroyed.

So it's back down to jet vs jet. But, keep in mind... at this point hundreds of both Russians and Americans are dead, probably a couple billion worth of hardware destroyed... would either side escalate to this point? Would there be any stopping the escalation at that point?

Let's hope we don't find out.
