they have local diesel backup ya know.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 64352463

Yup, it's a good backup in a rule of law situation. If the rule of law breaks down, those diesels will run as long as the belly tanks have fuel. Then our hope is the contractor who is supposed to deliver fresh fuel every three days.

When the nuke shuts down, it's basically safe but assumes either grid power or generator power will be available to keep the pumps running to cool the hot and spent fuel. The plan assumes the problem is just one plant. What happens if all the power plants have the same problem at the same time? Will that one contractor that's sold 30 fuel contracts to all the nuke plants in the midwest be able to keep his commitments to all 30 plants at the same time? How much fuel does he have on hand, who wins, the power plant or the hospital?

Once those pumps stop working, the clock starts ticking, the ponds will boil off first, then the cases will heat up and deteriorate, then fires will start burning, spewing radioactive cesium ash into the atmosphere.

If we are in a grid down situation, our ability to stop this will be difficult to impossible.

Not all nuke plants will have this issue but if just 5% do, that's a significant number considering the fire could burn for months. The risk is real and the impact is catastrophic, Is the probability so small that we can ignore? You need to decide for yourself but don't dismiss this lightly.

Really well written ^

This is way to risky, nuclear is susceptible to mother nature, human error, and infrastructure failure.

just look at Hanford nuclear waste site. they had a huge Colapse out of nowhere. maybe they got lucky and not much was released. Maybe there was a big release. they wont say if there was.

In Chernobyl, the undamaged reactors still ran for years. a roof structure fell on one of the turbines, causing a huge mess. that specific turbine/reactor was permanently decommissioned.

my point is thing happen, and they happen when no one is expecting.

Earthquakes
Tornados
Mother nature
Sustained power outages
Solar flares
Terrorism
Human error
Random collapses
Sink holes
Computer virus
Hacking
Flooding... the LIST GOES ON.

use your head people. nuclear is dangerous, it only takes one mishap and you end up with... well... FUKUSHIMA.

The OP is complete idiot .

I'm not even going to go into detail on this because I'm pretty sure it's already been explained to him/her , several times already

Nukes are fake. Have a Pepsi. That's nuclear.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74884464

You, Sir, are a fuckwit and have no place on this board with thinking people. Go watch your collection of Hitlery promises.

If the US experiences an EMP attack I expect ALL GE Mark I reactors to Fuku and we have at least a dozen of those turds in operation. GE should be held accountable for releasing a lethal POS upon the world

I am a retired radiation hardness and susceptibility engineer. I know what I am talking about. If you live within 100 miles of a Mark I get a Geiger counter and some iodine.
 Quoting: Kirk

Right. At LEAST a dozen of these.

And there are serious issues with other plants in the event of an EMP as well. They are not "hardened" as many are saying, and it takes a month of so to idle them down safely. Then you still have to deal with the cooling pools.

If the US were to have a serious EMP today, we'd ll be in trouble. You need to have your iodine right now.

not to mention the reports that the US power infrastructure is on the brink of current capabilities.

Think about how many electronics are being charged these days in America.

the power consumption is increasing, and the age/reliability of our power utilities are decreasing.

I see a problem with this.

A transformer on a power-line pole failed last year and dripped PCB oil (highly toxic) all over my car which was parked under it.

I spoke with the utilities, and they said that this unit was very old, and they were surprised it didn't "pop" (explode).

after that i start looking around and all the transformers are old as hell around.

its like OROVILLE DAM, patch job here and there, but no true maintenance/upgrading.

Typical i guess, prolly (for sure) a lot of patch jobs on our current leaking nuclear faculties.

It's ok. They all have 50 gal. Diesel generators for when all of the nuke energy goes away.

Every State has a obligation to protect it's people from this crazy stupid situation. Close the Nuke plants, and put all fuel into Cold storage, after it has been water cooled long enough to allow for it.

Yeah, turns out it's just not possible to get the gasoline to the onsite generators quickly enough. It's like physically impossible or something like that, trucks would get backed up on the highway.

This scenario was being thrown around a few years back when killer solar flares were the trendy conspiracy thinger.
