VERY INTERESTING.... my kids turned on the news alerts via Cortana on my comp. I NEVER USE CORTANA, anywho, i kept getting stock alerts RE Macys- whom I got three seperate alerts about - the very last one was that Macys stock dropped a full 17 points that day. I remember thinking was Macys stock going to PENNY STOCK status??

It is spread by a known flaw in MS Windows that access the Internet through port 445 - which is not supposed to connect to the Inernet.

It was exposed the US government to liability since it was discovered by the NSA / CIA and exploited for years...instead of making Microsoft aware of the problem.

Remember that these spy tools can leave breadcrumbs to make it look like any country / entity that the hacker wants.

These tools were created with a billion dollar + budget.

There is no way to link this to any country. The US Government saw to that with the development.

The early reporting said there was also involvement of Remote Desktop Protocol, which is extremely common to be open to the internet.

My guess is it uses a combination of flaws in both RDP and SMB. It uses RDP to get it's foot in the door, and SMB to pry it open the rest of the way.

Once behind a firewall protecting unpatched machines, it's a fucking massacre.
