They were our allies in both world wars... It was us (US) that screwed up after that when we looked around and decided they were the only other meaningful threat to us left on earth. Thus began the cold war, duck n cover, MAD and all that crap... cold war never really went "hot" except for flare-ups in proxy wars that we see today.
