Re: drain cleaner?
Second the drain snake suggestion. You can use it first or fool around with all kinds of remedies, natural and commercial, for as long as you care to - and then use the snake anyway. For rent at many outlets and cheap.
More deplorable all the time.

Re: drain cleaner?
Pour some dish soap down the hole.

Follow with boiling water.

Wait a few minutes and plunger it.

The soap lubricates and the boiling water softens the clog and heats the pipe expanding it a few thousands, sometimes enough to clear it and sometimes not.

If not, get a plumbing snake or tear the drain apart.

Re: drain cleaner?
Some good suggestions however DO NOT pour boiling water down PVC piping. There are also water jets that clear clogs really well if they are not more than 12' or so from the drain.

100% agree.

This was the product I was going to recommend. I've even used it in my washing machine. My front loader would always get a bad smell no matter how much bleach or "clean" cycles I ran.

Poured a bottle of this in, ran a "tub clean cycle" and the water ended up full of old lint and gross shit. Washer worked like new and the clothes are nice now.

Too bad my ex kept it during the divorce, it was a damn fine washing machine.

Even my brother thinks this product is the best he ever used, and his girlfriends hair ALWAYS clogs the drain, but not anymore when he uses this stuff.

I'm pretty sure it's 100% lye.

Re: drain cleaner?
Garden hose down the drain with a rag or something to seal the gap.
Works really well if you have a kitchen faucet adapter (like for filling water beds), otherwise, you'll need an assistant at the outside tap.
Start with short, gentle bursts, and turn your head so you don't get blasted.
Good luck!
