Researchers Grow Brain Cells on a Chip
Every human thought starts with a signal traveling from one neuron to another in the brain. Yet we know relatively little about how these connections form. In an effort to watch that process unfold, Australian researchers engineered a nanowire scaffold on a semiconductor chip that enables brain cells to grow and form circuits. The scientists described their device recently in the journal Nano Letters.

The neural scaffold falls far short of any brain-on-a-chip that futurists might imagine. But it does provide a way for scientists to guide the growth of neurons and study their connectivity, says Vini Gautam, a biomaterials engineer at Australian National University who led the study.

That has been a challenge for scientists trying to recreate neural circuitry in the lab. Neurons in the brain connect and communicate in a highly ordered way. But in the lab, the cells tend to reconstruct randomly and suffer from experimental limitations that render the circuitry nothing like the real thing in the brain.

“Understanding how neural circuits form in the brain is one of the fundamental questions in neuroscience,” Gautam says. Those connections form the basis for how we process information, and understanding them is key to developing treatments for mental disorders, she says.

Re: Researchers Grow Brain Cells on a Chip
Thanks for the interesting post OP. hf

I'm rather interested in the subject, for I will be practicing in neuroregenerative cell research group this autumn, I've read the group utilizes 2- or 3D biomaterials but haven't actually read they could be grown over chips too. The group which I work with focuses on applications in e.g. in vitro modeling of biological processes and neurological diseases, graft development, and neurotoxicity screening platforms. Pretty excited working in there.

I find it rather fashinating that the processes and active potentials happening in our brains can actually be simulated and stimulated. But is it really "thought"? Doesn't simulating real brain processes need a "processor" or processer, "You"? Without the processor, the cell growth is similiar to transformated cells, also known as cancer cells, growing endlessly without purpose. It is merely random bits of ones and zeroes if "you" don't know to read it. But this is still merely a conjecture.

You can practically grow limitless amount of nerve cells from pluripotent stem cells in liquid suspension. It's really new and complicated stuff, but who knows if something great could arise from that area, something similiar to invention of penicillin. Could come from anywhere really.

Cheers.

Not a science person, but for what it's worth I'd say yes, there would have to be a subject or consciousness to spark any neural process into action. Without such a central command or processor any connections sparked would probably be random and meaningless. Or so it seems to me. I actually doubt they will ever come close to simulating human brain function in any meaningful way.

I agree, I think we are still very far from actually growing a brain as an organ, like scientists can already grow other organ and tissue transplants. I think there needs to be some kind of artifical stimulation of different genes that manifest different parts of the desired organ (i.e brain), but how that all can be done in proprly "organized" sequence is another matter entirely. I too think it's rather far out, but who knows. Technological and ethical issues have to be taken into account also.

I think simulating real brain activity isn't what medical research aims for, but instead simply trying to find better ways to help with different physical and neurological problems and disorders, for example more efficient ways to help people recover from brain infarct or cerebral hemorrhage. If we had more knowledge how nerve cells regenerate and how we could help them regenerate, we could help many many people. Maybe I'll get to do research like that someday, maybe it's already being done, don't really know for sure. The future is coming on is coming on is coming on...

Still not even close to even replicating Gods most highly advanced machine, the human body. Let alone creating something entirely unique. Everything man does is simply a manipulation or a copy of what already is and most times cant even get close to replicating what already is. All of our "intelligence" and not even close, not even a hairs breadth to creating something even remotely close to as advanced as the human body/brain. Yet we think an entirely random unintelligent process created all of it. The stupidity and arrogance of man.
