US authorities have been investigating Assange and WikiLeaks since at least 2010 when it released, in cooperation with publications including the Guardian a million classified cables from US embassies leaked by US army whistleblower Chelsea Manning.
Trump himself told an interviewer: “I think it’s disgraceful, I think there should be like death penalty or something.”

"If Obama grants Manning clemency Assange will agree to US extradition despite clear unconstitutionality of DoJ (Department of Justice) case." One of a string of January 2017 comments. There was no agreement between US government and Assange, merely a Assange twitter comment. Apparently wikileaks and Assange are enemy of the state, a bigger threat than Isis.
