Where are they apart though? Taoism doesn't have Jesus but He hadn't been born at the time of Lao Tzu.

Re: Are Christianity and Taoism compatible?
Being a Christian means being a follower of Christ. I've never studied Taoism, but if I understand correctly the most basic definition is living in harmony with what is around you. There is certainly nothing wrong with trying to get along with people and go-with-the-flow as it were, but some people and behaviors simply are not compatible with the teachings of Jesus Christ and "the flow" can lead to places a Christian shouldn't go.

Getting along with others is all well and good, but there is a difference between tolerance for peace sake and acceptance. Change what you can. Tolerate what you must. Accept no evil.
"God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always, well informed... If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty... Let them take arms... What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. " - Thomas Jefferson in 1787

Re: Are Christianity and Taoism compatible?
I believe myself to be a Christian Mystic

What Is A Christian Mystic:

So, what is a Christian Mystic? A person concerned not with knowing the letter of the Word, or religious dogmas, but with knowing the Spirit of the Word, which is to say living from within the experience of God’s word at the very core of being. A mystic, quite simply, is a lover of God who pursues the beloved from a deep realization that life as a Christian is evolving as the soul moves toward its fullness and destiny in relationship to God.

To travel into the world of the Christian mystic, one must discard concepts such as ego, pride and spiritual materialism in favor of adopting a sense of humility and hopeful expectation. It is to begin a great and stirring adventure that moves the soul from the kingdom of darkness to the Kingdom of God.

Re: Are Christianity and Taoism compatible?
Taoism doesn't need or have a deity; it allows the possibility, but there is no didactical assertion of some conscious entity controlling the the universe. Rather, it is about the patterns by which life and causality work. Taoism makes no specific claims about the deep nature of the universe, beyond recognising that a full understanding by humans (at least a verbal understanding) is probably not possible.

It contains such beautiful, profound truth that if you find a belief system that inescapably contradicts it, then either:

(a) That belief system is fundamentally false, or
(b) Your understanding of that belief system is misguided.

I alsways find it interesting how you get diametrically opposed views on this from people who all claim to be christians. So, is it a, or b?

Re: Are Christianity and Taoism compatible?
I find Christianity to be incompatible with anything other than other make believe nonsense. It is not compatible with republicanism, or science. I would say no it is not compatible with Taoism as Taoism understands the Yin and Yang. Christianity is all Yang no yin. It is too one sided and not based in anything real.
 Quoting: Desertwolf

Christianity is right and wrong as yin yang is yes and no
 Quoting: A Friend

I would say yes there are truths in Christianity, but as a whole Christianity is not truth. It can be for a time, a subjective truth at the individual level. Many get stuck in this. I try to dissolve ego as such I tend to speak at a more societal level than personal.
 Quoting: Desertwolf

I finally found God and have a personal relationship with Jesus.
 Quoting: A Friend

Good for you, tell him to stop by I would love to have a beer or wine with him and chat. I mean if he shows up so I can have a personal relationship with him that would be great I could use a friend with his apparent tenacity. I used to identify as a christian, now I see it in much the same way many in America see Islam. There is no religion higher than truth. H.P. Blavatsky.
I eventually returned to the religion I had been brought up in which is called Theosophy. I do not regret my time as a Christian, it taught me much especially about the history and culture of Europe. Much of what Christianity has accomplished is admirable. However, there are higher truths.
Take A.A. for existence, it is modeled on Christianity. Though they allow for other Higher Powers the original 12 steps were based on personal revelation from the bible.
Their first tenant is we are powerless over our addiction. Christians teach the same thing, we are powerless over sin.
This is not true. There are many things persons can do to fight their addiction, likewise there are many things a person can do to overcome sin.
To me it is a religion that keeps people trapped in a dependent state, never developing spiritual/will power to control their minds and bodies.
My ethics would never allow for someone else to pay for my wrongs. I am an adult, if I do wrong I will pay the consequences, to rely on another to pay my fines is well pretty immature.

We cannot wait until governments are enlightened enough to legislate and cap the carbon emissions.

One thing we can easily do to achieve this goal: we can declare Sunday to be a fossil fuel-free day or a low-carbon day or at least an energy-saving day.

The taoism that Western people see is philosophical. The taoism practiced in Asia is a different, superstitious creature. Can you read taoism and find inspiration? Yes.

Is this the same as Asian taoism, with various lords of the afterlife, fortune-telling games, etc.? Not really.

You could say the same thing about Christianity. (Or even the US constitution.)

Should you close your mind and focus on only one set of stories? That choice is yours.

I was eating dinner alone in a restaurant once and reading a version of the Tao. A gift from a bonafide Asian Tai Chi master. The waitress walked up and asked what I was reading, I told her and she said "yeah, but don't let that crap take you away from The Lord".

I told her not to worry and still left a decent tip. That's what I felt both a Bible and the Tao would "teach". I just left her and her preachy attitude behind in the restaurant and whistled on down the road.
 Quoting: Captain Spaulding 74630530

preachy attitude? The waitress was correct.

Taoism,Buddhism, etc..... are all false.

2 Timothy 4:3-4 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

take a look at the world today and see how folks are turning away from truth to wander after the myths of new-age, taoism, buddha, mystics, shamans, islam, chrislam, etc....

Great question... I found this... I will read this and see

From a Taoist perspective we simplify action down and focus closer to the Awareness side of this equation. We do this for flexibility. The more action based a person is, the less options they have in life. Taoist’s love both options and potential. Yet a Taoist accepts action at the most graceful moments, since action when done well also creates potential in addition to only using potential. Careless actions based purely on consumption merely use up potential compared to graceful actions that actually build up potential and options.
