What type of rifle fired this round?
 Quoting: The Deplorable MnB15

The Swedish Mauser, a WW2 era surplus rifle. Ammunition will be expensive and difficult to find. The rifle, too.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 68717544

Easy to find all over the net.

Hit what you aim at and others get the hint.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25443394

Well if they're hard to find, that's not a huge deal, but limited ammo would probably nix that option...unless you know of a supplier that the other ac doesn't know about..

Make sure you write "For all legal purposes" on your 'reason for permit' part of your NY application..hopefully you'll have a county Judge who's 2nd amendment friendly and you'll get concealed carry.

If you say just for home or property thats the only place you can carry it (trust me I'm in NY)

Anyway while you wait

Mossberg 500 20Ga (But 12 ga is fun too)

Any 30-30 lever action mine is an old Marlin 336 (before Marlin was bought out by Remmy)

Between those two you'll be able to handle any animal on four (or two) legs that you may encounter in NY state!

Now go watch some Hickock45 and take out some two liters!

Defense of course. Shotgun for close encounters, rifle for those approaching my property lol
 Quoting: The Deplorable MnB15

I wouldn't rule out a 12 gauge (most versatile and effective HD/SD rounds). Many ammo companies make a low recoil or "tactical" buckshot. My former agency used a 14" Rem 870 with low recoil buckshot and the tiniest of female agents could shoot with no problem. Whoever suggested a youth stock was on track, in short and don't like full size stocks. Check out the Hogue L.O.P., is super comfy hard rubber and short pull.

As for rifles, one advantage of a semi auto weapon system is the gas operation mitigates recoil. My short AR-16 with a muzzle brake/comp has no recoil.

A lot of ranges have women only classes, and they may be able to give you some great hand on try outs.

I have a Browning 243 X-bolt. I LOVE it! It has a very minimal recoil, it has a great design for the shoulder rest too...no ouchies. It's very accurate and has a really good distance capability. But, that's for long range. In the house, I keep a Ruger 357, loaded with Hornady Critical Defence ammo. My daughter has her Smith & Wesson Colt 45 as well. All three shoot very nicely and don't have much for recoil. I'm embarrassed to say that I've also a cheap, pretty much throwaway, Highpoint 9mm...but it is only a back up last resort. I don't recommend it to anyone. It's slide is very stiff, it's not very accurate, and it sometimes jams up. I don't like it at all, but I just can't bring myself to get rid of it. You know, the more the merrier! I hope this helps? No matter what, practice and get to know whatever you choose to purchase VERY well. The last thing you want to do is feel uncomfortable or nervous when it's time to use your new baby.

Availability is a little better than I expected, yes. Still, if I'm going to recommend a first/only rifle, it's going to be something with reliable domestic ammo production and that virtually anyone can find locally if needed.

Re: Best Shotgun & Rifle to purchase?
It's going to take a while to get permitted here in NY, so in the mean time I'd like to purchase a shotgun and rifle. I know there's plenty of threads on guns, however I'd like to discuss these 2 particular styles.

Any suggestions? For the shotgun, I'd like ease of use and minimal recoil, if that's possible. The rifle should have minimal recoil as well, along with great accuracy (yes, I know user input is the key factor in that, but I also know some designs are better than others)

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much! hf

Honestly, I don't know why .243 isn't more popular among non-hunters. It has a reputation for burning out barrels quickly, but if you want a laser beam, .243 is about as close as you're going to get.

Howdy OP:

MY suggestion,

Find an NRA affiliated shooting range near you, give them a call and ask them if they have an instructor that could show you different rifles and shotguns on the range.

This way you have an expert that knows the weapons and can help you choose what's best for you AND do it at minimal cost before you purchase the weapon.
