He's right, if you remove the cap, the thermostat in directly under it and can be changed with no tools.

warped heads, all it takes now-a-days is to get it hot once. or a t-stat. Which I've usually seen at the end of the supply hose from the radiator to the engine. usually has like a square mount. but as mentioned above they can put it in alot of places. or a water pump.

If you drained the system and refilled it then you have an air pocket! You must purge the air out.

Ok, with radiator cap off it's not under pressure, the temp won't rise as high..

Yes it will, pressure just raises the boiling point, not the temperature. Roughly three degrees for every pound of pressure.

Re: Radiator coolant is only circulating when radiator cap is off
I bet you have some scaling in the radiator. That would prevent the correct heat transfer and would make your engine run a little hotter. If this is the case, then use a radiator cleaner and flush it out. Otherwise, there may be a problem with your temperature switch. This sensor sends a signal to your thermostat and could be out of calibration...

Also, replace your thermostat. It may be sticking and not fully opening up...

It's strange that you should be getting air in the system without losing antifreeze. It could be warped heads, have you checked to see if your oil is milk colored. If so, could be blown head gasket....

Do you have transmission cooler lines or oil cooler lines connected to your radiator. I wonder if you could have an internal leak, in your radiator, between these fluids. If so, then change your radiator.

I think he drained it and changed the AF, that's when the problem began. He's got an air pocket that needs to be purged, thus the bleeder valve he keeps opening and getting air out of.
