Most New Zealanders aren't bilingual. A lot of white South Africans probably speak that Afrikaans gibberish, but only completely out of necessity. If they learn any French, it's just incidental, the same way Americans in the southwest naturally pick up some Spanish phrases here and there. There are close to, if not more than one-hundred indigenous languages, each with numerous dialects, and still, the majority speaks Spanish. I will certainly concede that there are people who speak Mixtec/Mayan/etc mixed with some Spanish and so on, but the exception doesn't make the rule.
