When it comes to music, nothing beats analog.

MP3s are good for compact storage and mobility but on any given day I would prefer a vinyl record over an mp3.

I will admit however, I do have well over 20,000 mp3s on my media server.

High end frequency response on vinyl is too bad for me. But vinyl can be better than MP3.

I prefer lossless compressed (like FLAC) or raw digital.

Always trying to figure out ways to get us to re-buy our entire music collection. Maybe we should have stuck with vinyl.

Wow. weird thread to stumble upon.

I was just thinking about this driving home from work, without reading any news or articles about it.

With that being said, it should be obvious I guess

Also, the reason I was thinking about MP3 being obsolete is not because of other codecs, it's because the majority of the masses streams their media rather than save or encode. Music is no longer saved it's just streamed via spotify and what not.

Most people don't even know what format the stream source is

"Vinyl record" - Nothing beats it and never will.
Real instruments.. sure.

But MP3 will stay as long as the good old CD.

"AAC" is just another name with better quality and better savings of samples and patterns.

Just call AAC /= MP3

(Because MP3 is like Windows to the computer - the name is already made in business.)

The reason the music industry is pushing this is because trillions of MP3 files are sat on devices around the world, they donít want this, this does not make sales, if they can get rid of MP3s then the new format is live streaming, cash cash cash for the music industry, they can charge per listen, potentially charging the same customer many times for the same song over years.

I honestly can't remember that last time I heard someone tell me when they downloaded this song or that album, whether it be MP3, FLAC, etc... Hell, I can't even remember the last time I heard about someone buying a song from iTunes or whatever the fuck.

Fact is, no one is storing their music anymore, as actual files that is. Not just music, movies and videos as well. gone are the days of having a collection of movies and music on a hard drive. It still happens to some degree, but it's slowly dying.

The closet thing to a collection these days is paying a monthly sub to your streaming service of choice and setting a playlist.

MP3 is FREE, so it isn't dead.

What is the new file type that replaces it? The article in the OP was kinda scant.

hesright

That's part of the killer folks.

It's fast, relatively seemless and way more convenient than skimming through a folder deep in your computer to find the mp3 or other music file... lol, it used to be that getting up, pulling a CD and loading it into your drive was a hassle, now it's locating a folder on the computer you routinely use 1rof1

Stream speeds and quality have drastically improved. You can easily load one from your phone off the shittiest signal and it'll play with ease, with quality being impeccable too

Yeah....AAC is proprietary (ITUNES, etc) - which makes it completely undesirable.

Stick with MP3 - it's good enough.

Ultimately, the industry does not want you owning the physical media, digital or otherwise. They now prefer it to be digital so that they can control and strip the individuals ability to do with it as they please.

I will always store it myself whether it be a vinyl album on my shelf, reel to reel tape, or the digital copy stored on my media server. I am not a fan of streaming, I want absolute control.

its a shitty quality file. it actually loses sonic qualities
they condensed music back when hard drives where small and when napster was on the scene.
honestly it killed the music industry.

About the video - yeah, but using a higher bitrate MP3 makes for fantastic quality.

Apple products are barfy, so AAC seems like a bad idea, unless you love Apple and Itunes. I use neither.
