Any steps to now update Win 7 without it updating your sys to 10?
 Quoting: Win 7 Update 37901311

Yeah, you want to install the March 2017 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7

[link to support.microsoft.com (secure)]
 Quoting: Neo81xxx

You can install each patch individually, or here's the link for the Security Update for Win 7 (KB4012122) that includes all the updates listed in the link above.

I did it and it worked fine. No problems, and it hasn't asked me to upgrade to Win 10.

I used the top choice, but check your system first.

[link to www.catalog.update.microsoft.com]

If you still want to go with installing them individually, the critical one in the first link is MS17-010.

I probably will switch to a another operating system when I get a new laptop. This one is so old, it's on it's last little ones and zeros. Changing now would probably smoke it.

Zen,
Same here. May not look into another OS, but perhaps a MAC vs. Win. Then again, maybe a new OS. Thanks for one stop shop link. Thanks to all other posters' suggestions.

The Exploit specifically targeted unpatched Windows 7 systems. It is Microsoft's fault they were not patched. Due to both the forced Windows 10 upgrade shenanigans, and the faulty windows update that didn't work properly for most users (likely another attempt to get people to accept Windows 10).

Fuck Microsoft!

Disable SMBv1 which the EternalBlue exploit uses. EternalBlue is the only reason WannaCry was any more effective than all the other crappy ransomware out there.

SMBv1 is not needed anyway, it's decades old and has been superseded by v2 and v3 (which are of no use to EternalBlue).

There is something most of you dont realize. It's not regular people who got hit. People who use Windows 7 and have an Internet connection don't just get port 139 which is SMB exposed like that. Majority of them are businesses with bad security and people who expose certain ports by accident.

Re: 98% Of WannaCry Victims Were Using Windows 7
Windows update stopped working for most Windows 7 computers I came across. I had to run some manual updates in order to get Windows update working again.
I think it had to do with the GWX (get Windows ten) files sent to all Windows 7 computers.
Many people were probably un-patched without realizing it.
Windows update would just hang and continue to search for updates and never completing.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69322556

Correct, Microsoft has deliberately broken Windows 7 updates several times as many people have discovered.

To fix Windows 7 x64 with SP1 updates research (download and install) the following two .msu (Microsoft Updater) patches in the order shown below. Note this can also be done straight after fresh install of Windows 7 after Service Pack 1 (SP1) has been applied.

KB 3172605 (Windows6.1-KB3172605-x64.msu)

KB 3020369 (Windows6.1-KB3020369-x64.msu)

Windows Updates should start working again, and add about 2 years worth of patches.

Note: Microsoft added some of the Windows 10 "telemetry features" to Windows 7

Research the following two Windows 7 services (they need to be disabled or deleted using an elevated command prompt):

DiagTrack

dmwappushservice

For those who understand, the following commands may be helpful...

sc stop DiagTrack
sc stop dmwappushservice

sc delete DiagTrack
sc delete dmwappushservice

Also research the file where Microsoft log key strokes:

AutoLogger-Diagtrack-Listener.etl

The following elevated command may be helpful, it will delete the content of the file, replacing it with an empty one.

echo "" > C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Diagnosis\ETLLogs\AutoLogger\AutoLogger-Diagtrack-Listener.etl

Buy a Mac, use VPN...your chances of being hacked are significantly decreased.

Once you go Mac you don't go back. Working on a Windows machine now makes me want to puke. It's loaded with Malware from the get go.

This is going to sound stupid, so go ahead and be sure to flame...

Why don't you learn how to code in python and make games for Linux, if your complaint is that there's no apps for Linux.

Everyone seems to complain about the lack of games for Linux, me too to an extent. Why not learn enough about Python to program some? You could even make money by selling them for $2.99 USD on Steam.

I bought RPGmaker and you can deploy your RPG games into Linux.(Probably Ubuntu, but Mint is based off Ubuntu.) I'm thinking about making a couple over the next 3 years, because I'm unhappy about there not being enough native Linux games...

Just something to think about. Alternatively you could do a GameGuru/RPGmaker and make software for other people to make games for Linux.

It's not like we don't have the time considering we're on a forum.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74925071

There's Wine but I had problems getting it to work with programs (Games) that needed to restart the computer.

I could've mounted and unmounted and remounted the game. (NFS Hot Pursuit 2) But my Funstation 4 looks a lot prettier and runs a lot faster. Besides racing games are all basically the same.

Re: 98% Of WannaCry Victims Were Using Windows 7
I'm an IT Manager at a very large manufacturing company in Arkansas and Indiana. We have over 600 computers/servers, the only reason this has had a large impact is because there a lot of incompetent IT staff around the world. We have been protected since the first NSA leaks surfaced. You have to know what you are doing, we haven't had an infection in the last 9 years since I've managed the systems. I recommend Fortinet firewalls and ESET Endpoint Security. Both of those security companies have been blocking these exploits since March. Also, keep your damn computers up to date with Windows Update. Microsoft released patches for their OS's in March including XP even though they already dropped support. There are still a lot of reasons to keep XP around, hell we have a few specialized systems running Windows 95 and even DOS.

Also, Fuck Liberals.

P.S. Quit being so damn paranoid Microsoft isn't listening to you or invading your privacy. Our firewall at the plant logs all traffic and I have captures millions of packets with Wireshark and there is nothing nefarious going on with Microsoft operating systems. We are very sensitive to leaks, since we have very private proprietary technology and proprietary nano particles we do not want leaked. My only advice besides what is given is do not store shit in the cloud. aka one drive, google drive, box, drop box etc... I have access to everything at our facilities, so I know IT at these places look through everything.

Bullshit, I have a Macbook Air and run Windows 10. You can't do shit on Apples OS, especially managing large networks. Remoting into servers is a bitch and accessing everything in an Active Directory environment is a bitch. I buy apple for their build quality, but their operating system sucks from a network management standpoint. My desktop has 32 cores and 64 gigabytes of RAM, does Apple offer that? No
